Hi all,
I built my Son a PC last christmas. AMD 3200+ CPU. 9800 pro. 1Gb RAM. NF7s.
He has been playing CoD2 without any probs until yesterday, now it keeps crashing to the desktop as soon as it is started. I've checked all running processes and they're ok, I've uninstalled the game and graphics drivers and reinstalled several times, I've tried the original drivers as well as newer ones. It just won't run. It does this in the single player as well as multiplayer games. It's running directx 9c. Acording to task manager there is nothing else running and there is no spyware etc found. Help.
Any ideas guys?

Could be symptomatic of something else... the most likely candidate for degradation over time is dust build up on your fans or even fan failure. Open it up and check the fans on your CPU and graphics card are turning first. If they are, power the machine off, get yourself a can of compressed air and blow all the dust out of the machine. Pay particular attention to the CPU and graphics card. Apologies if you've already eliminated heat as the problem :)

Cheers decist but the PC is clean, it's not quite three months old yet. Also it is only CoD2 that is having a problem.

HAve you installed anything recently that may be causing problems? Even something seemingly unrelated such as updating video codecs or adding a new PCI card can conflict with Games. Have you changed drivers for anything? Another odd thing to check is if you've changed your desktop resolution or colour depth recently, some games throw a hissy fit if the resolution isn't what they expect when they start up.

There's a troubleshooting thread Here that might have some tips.

Also, with regards to it only being COD2 causing problems, have you tried other 3D intensive games on this PC?

All other games run fine. I even reinstalled windows today, then CoD2, again, still won't run.

I think it does after reinstalling and running the first time.

They have been updated a few times. I have reinstalled windows but your post reminds me I had to get .net originally, a reinstall of that may be the answer. If .net was the prob I didn't reinstall it this time around, Cheers ryko.

I did get to the options once and the settings looked fine but after I try the .net reinstall I'll try that if it's still not working.

    Thanks for the input guys.

The PC exceeds all the requirements for the game and ran well before. I have reinstalled .net, I have done a repair install of Windows (xp pro), I have reinstalled graphics drivers several times from the original to the newest, I have tried to run the game in all resolutions and refresh rates, I have reinstalled directx 9c, I have tried all compatabilty modes, Nothing I do will get the game running again. Could there be something in the registery left from the old install? if so, could you tell me how to get rid of it so I can play the game? I have tried everything I can think of except a complete format of his hard drive but I really do not want to do that.
This is getting really frustrating as it played fine before.
