Bootmagic and MBR??

edited March 2006 in Science & Tech
My first time on your forum. Very informative and helpful.

I initially installed partition magic on my Toshiba satellite to increase the size of my other partition. So stupid me also installed bootmagic because I thought Partition magic can't function without it:confused2 . I am a novice at this and it ws the first time that I reformatted my own PC. So after resizing I reformatted my C drive with the original Toshiba CD , because previously I installed WINXP PRO on it. That wa smy biggest mistake:thumbsdow . Of course I didn't know that I was suppose to uninstall Boot magic before reformatting. Oly to discover that at bootup I get a message " MBR CORRUPT! FIX BOOTMAGIC CONFIGURATION , PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE" This is truly annoying and I am concerned that it is affecting my OS. I understand that bootmagic can only run on FAT 16-32 systems as mine is a NTFS. I really do not want to rereformat it again.- convert to FAT ,-UNINSTALL BOOTMAGIC - FORMAT AS ntfs:shakehead ...too much hassle.

I have searched everywhere for bootmagic on my HD:scratch: I even tried to reinstall it but as you all know it won't install because my partition is NTFS. I have even reinstalled partiton magic 8.1 in the hopes to find Bootmagic linked to it.:confused2

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How do I get rid of the message and uninstall bootmagic?

Easy fix... Take a Windows 95/98/ME Boot Floppy. Boot from floppy and then type

    "fdisk /mbr" (without the quotes)

That should kill the bootloader. If you do not have a Win95/98 bootable floppy, go here and download this application that will creat the floppy for you.

Report back if you need further help!!!

thanks for the reply. I don't have a floppy drive but only a cdrw drive. I haven't checked out the site yet. I reckon I can burn it to CD and use it from there?:skeptic:

QCH2002, I have checked it out and there are too many options. which boot disk should I make? The funny thing is my OS is win xp , but when I reformatted it, it said windows 98? Is that possible? Is Win98 the basis for winxp? I am clueless about Microsoft. I think I am going to invest in an apple!

I am thinking about: NTFS boot disk???????????? wrong , right?

Windows 98 is NOT the base for WinXP. If it is stating Win98 that may be from Bootmagic. You need to get into DOS to do the fdisk /mbr. Since your hard drive is using NTFS (NT File System instead of FAT32) there is no DOS to boot into A Windows 98 Boot Floppy (or CD) will allow you to get into a "psdo" DOS environment.

I have to leave so I cannot make an ISO image for you... if you still need help tomorrow, I'll be more than happy to help.

OK. THNAKS FOR THE HELP. I will make an iso today of win 98 OEM? WIN 98 VERSION B???, right???? and with this boot disc will it automatically reformat my drive? I am really clueless at this and everything is a learning experience for me.I really do not want to reformat my drive. I tried to boot with my recovery CD but it asked me if I wanted to reformat. I know it is a stupid question and I ma sure it won't reformat my drive because it is a way to access the the Dos , right? Anyway, I will wait for your reply. If this works I will be indebted for ever and who knows I will even be able to guide people with the same problem next time.

The Windows 98 Boot CD is just to allow you to get into a DOS mode to do the fdisk /mbr. What FDISK /MBR does is clear the master boot record and that gets rid of the Bootmagic screen. No data should be lost, it will not format the drive... just fix the bootmagic problem. I'm having a hard time finding a prebuilt ISO for Windows98 Bootable Floppy... I'm still looking but if I don't find one, I'll make one for you and post a link for you to download...

Well... with all the problems you're having, you may want to backup all your data and start over fresh anyway...

Does the BIOS see the floppy and CD-ROM?
