Programs (Anti-Virus) Shutdown and won't run

Hello guys,

Firstly, let me go ahead and thank anyone and everyone who can help with this, as it has been bugging me for *so* long. Secondly, I really admire the help you guys give.

I have noticd that on my laptop (I'm posting from my PC), no anti-virus programs, or most other programs related to cleanup close the moment I try to open them. For instance, AVG that I used to have would just open, show for a split second, then close.

This post was similar to the problem I was having. Just this morning, I have downloaded HJT and Spybot. At the moment on my laptop, I'm running an update with Spybot, and regarding HJT, I followed closely the aforementioned post, and deleted two similar files (only two of the mentioned ones were there, but duh because its regarding a different computer), which actually let me run HJT *OUT* of Safemode for more than a split second (now it's at 2 seconds! yippee!).

Anyway, I will post an HJT log soon, but until then, let me also mention that I just recently got rid of (or at least I believe I did) Spyquake or whatever, through deleting a .dll file mentioned in a trouble-shooter, which actually seemed to have done the trick. I have seen the sticky titled "Spyware Quake" or w/e, but unfortunately, roguescanfix does NOT work for me (says like ! BAT FILE NOT FOUND ! or something after I go through the initial steps of the run.bat file). I *think* I got rid of this thing, but I don't know for sure (it didn't appear in HJT, when I tried comparing the log from my laptop to the log of user zola25). Ever since Spyware Quake came and left my computer as well, every once in a while a window (one similar to a windows error, not a popup) opens up and says "The site you are visiting requires ActiveX..." etc., and is really annoying because it bumps whatever I'm doing.

The bottom line is, however, that a bunch of my programs, all related to anti-virus, are shutdown immediately upon open. As we are speaking, I am running Spybot, and it just said "No immediate threats were found."

Thanks again, sorry for the delay, I was running late for work. Again, I have *NO* idea why I can access any folder, but all a sudden when I go to HJT's folder, bam everything closes and I get a blank desktop screen.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click 'Fix Checked':

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
(Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning)

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks for the detailed post, but already I'm having problems.

I downloaded the smitRem, and did the unzipping to desktop etc.

The Panda ACtivescan site you gave me does NOT work on my computer, it reads "Page Cannot be Displayed," while it can be read perfectly on my desktop, the computer I'm posting from at the moment. Same situation for the Ewido software, which I downloaded from main PC to send to my laptop because the page read as cannot be displayed.

But now, when I try to run Ewido, it opens for like a second, then just closes. Same thing that ANY anti-virus program I try to run does....it makes me feel like I'm being watched =x
