Spyware Sheriff!!!

hi guys.. i got rid of this one myself.. with ewido and just manual deletion of bull**** that i seen in processes .. etc.. i have no virus / spyware anymore.. but 2 things remained unfixed..

the firewall for XP would not open in security center nor firewall under control panel.. SO i reinstalled XP +SP2 over top itself, and the firewall is back, just like i did after getting spyware strike.. haha.. but ya.. fixed that firewall stuff.. BUT

having a problem with NOT being able to choose a desktop background / wallpaper from under display/properties ... ????

weirdest thing i've come across to date i would have to say.. the "background" word above the list of backgrounds is grey'd out, but i'm able to select a background color... the browse button is also grey'd out..

although.. when i went to my computer then program files.. and closed the explorer window after seeing that spyware sheriff stuff was gone.. i seen my background wallpaper POP up for a split second.. and then was overwritten by the basic blank color background again..

basically... how do i get my wallpaper to show up again.. it seems as though active desktop is running or something like in win98 plus .. but i don't have any plus! packs or anything like that.. and no web content on my desktop either.. and it is NOT set to display my current homepage.. it is just a basic desktop with whatever color i choose.. but i can't choose a image file for a desktop wallpaper cause the browse is grey'd and the image names in the background list are not selectable..

tricky one for ya.. plz help..
thanks..

ah... gotta luv the smitfraud.reg ... .hahahahahhah thanks guys..

read a previous problem of someone else's and went through it thoroughly and smitfraud, reg and cleanup 4.0 were mentioned so i used them also.. and BAM .. fixed after reboot.. can select a wallpaper now.. thanks!

not many out there on even close to my level, and when i have a problem this place is my last resort.. EVERYTIME - and so far it hasn't let me down.. i always find some little thing that helps me finish the fix..

and then grabbed the cleanup 4.0 and ran it and was like WHOA 2gig freed up!! hahaha right on.. even after using Tweaknow Powerpack's reg/disk cleaning stuff.. still freed up 2gig!!!! that is crazy deadly.. thanks...

    damn serial/crack sites!!!! f_ck! hahaa..

    Hello,

Ive got the exact same problem as you had. i know this may sound abit stupid but if i installed xp over my current xp, would it still keep the documents etc. or would i have to format? id really prefer to not have to format, as im really busy with work at the moment at home and i cant really afford to take a day off to backup everything and format.

I was also wondering if you could possibly post a link to the other post which you found help from, i had a browse but theres alotta threads and i couldnt see which one was specficially releveant to this darn virus,

ive gotten rid of all of the infected files now, its just the firewall saying it failed to load because of a unknown error, and my wallpaper selection box is grey'd out.

Any help you guys could give, or point me too would be very much appreciated thanks!

    Okay,

ive sorted out the desktop background issues thanks to the thread about smitfraud.reg,

However im still in abit of a pickle about the firewall.. i thought maybe using windows repair option might work, but popped in my windows disc and its only sp1, and gave me something about theres a newer version installed. and i would have to delete the current windows to install...

Which isnt very appealing. could anyone please help with the firewall issues?

    Thanks

    install ewido 3.5
    install antivir (newest version)
install smitfraud.reg (link in another thread somewhere)
reboot safe mode run ewido scan
    run antivir scan
    'merge smitfraud.reg'
    reboot
with 'windows xp +sp2' (if you want to reinstall xp overtop)
OR OR OR... you could possibly uninstall service pack 2 from
add remove programs.. then just reinstall using your sp1 disk..
but then you will have to update to service pack 2 again online
    if you want the firewall..

easiest way would be to just find a XP +SP2 install CD..
    [windows xp pro +sp2]
    http://bushtorrent.com/torrent.php?id=51513
    or
    http://bushtorrent.com/torrent.php?id=52536

    enjoy.

should work out for you after you install one of those..
    peace.

so is the only way to resolve the firewall problem is to reinstall windows?

(if i uninstall sp2), can i then "repair" xp with the installation disc? or do i need to overwrite my current windows? (would that lose my files?)

    Sorry for being a nusence

    Thanks

REPAIR install will not kill your documents and settings
it will only re-install all system files, etc..
basically press enter to install XP .. and then choose
repair current installation.. DO not do the repair using
    recovery console...

ah.. yes i would try going to control panel/add remove programs
and uninstalling sp2... then reboot with your SP1 disk and attempt
to REPAIR install it.. then go back to the ms update site and get SP2
    again after..

    OR

just get that SP2 from the link i gave you and boot up using that
and install over top.. .. but you also might need to use a new KEY
if you are currently using HOME edition.. you will need to find a HOME
edition with SP2 instead.. cause the key will need to be re-entered..
and a home key won't work with a pro SP2 install disk..

so if you are using your disk..you shouldn't have to worry about that,
but if you download one of the above links.. and don't currently use
pro edition of XP you will need a pro key.

    good luck.
