Ghost.err

edited April 2006 in Hardware
Hello,

I'M NEW IN THIS FORUM AND I COULD REALLY USE YOUR HELP. I'M TRYING TO REPROGRAMM MY COMPUTER BY USING THE RECOVERY DISKS BUT I'M GETTING A POP UP THAT SAYS "GHOST.ERR." WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES THIS MEAN. THE REASON WHY I HAD TO REPROGRAM MY LAPTOP (TOSHIBA SATELLITE 1805-S273) IS BECAUSE I HAD A WORM IN MY SYSTEM.

THERE IS ANOTHER DISADVANTAGE THOUGH. MY D-DRIVE ISN'T AS GOOD AS IT USED TO BE SO IT ONLY READS BRAND NEW DISKS. THAT'S WHY I HAD TO ORDER BRAND NEW DISKS FROM TOSHIBA. AND THOUGH IT READS THEM IT GIVES ME THAT POP UP ONCE I PUT IN THE SECOND INSTALLATION DISK.

PLEASE HELP. ALL OF YOU COMPUTER ADDICTED PEOPLE OUT THERE KNOW WHAT A TERRIBLE THING IT IS TO BE COMPUTERLESS.

FURTHERMORE, I'M TRYING TO USE AN EXTERNAL D-DRIVE IN ORDER FOR IT TO READ THE RECOVERY DISKS BUT I DON'T BELIEVE MY LAPTOP IS DETECTING IT. HOW CAN I GET MY LAPTOP TO DETECT AN EXTERNAL D-DRIVE. THEY TOLD ME THAT I MUST PRESS "ESC" THEN "F1" WHEN THE COMPUTER IS JUST STARTING AND THAT GIVES ME A MENU. BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CHANGE IN THE MENU IN ORDER FOR IT TO DETECT THE EXTERNAL D-DRIVE.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

    Hello,

How do you change the settings to be able to have your laptop detect your external D-Drive. I was told that you should press "ESC" when the system is barely starting. Followed by "F1" which will lead you to a menu where you can change some of the settings. And then "BOOT PRIORITY" but that didn't work quite well. Any tips?

    Thank you,
    Rasps.

What options does it give you?

Ghost is the program that was most likely used to make your recovery disk that means that an error was encountered.

Make sure the recovery disk is clean and if it is you could have bad ram or a bad hdd to test your ram download Memtest and burn the image to a disk.

    Hello,

    Thank you for answering

    profdlp:

It gives me the laptop's setup menu (or BIOS menu)

    Configuration
    Boot Priority

I don't remember all the options that they give since I'm typing this from my school, but I'll make sure to get all the options and post them here as soon as possible.

    Grayfox:

The recovery CD's that I'm using are brand new. The technician told me over the phone that it could be the hard-drive, like you mentioned, but I had been using my computer just fine previous to trying to re-install everything. The reason why I had to reinstall it was because I had gotten a worm Trojan and some of its friens. The reason why Ii had to order brand new recovery disks was because my lens is very sensible and it only reads brand new CDs. (which are much more expensive than I thought) It read the first recovery CD just fine. Then I put in the second one, it got up to 76% of the process and that's where "the ghost.err" pop up showed up. And the laptop makes a sound as though it's trying to read the disk but it can't eventhough it was reading it previous to that.

The specialist told me that I should change the BIOS settings but she said that she would charge 40 bucks to tell me what button to press over the phone but that she didn't guarantee that would work. What an outrage.

I hope you can help me

    Thank you,
    Edher

Under Boot Priority, make sure cdrom is listed first. If that doesn't work, look for an option like "External Device" or "Other". Try them all before you give up.
