Help Me Build A Small Form Factor PC for SM LAN

Heya!

I want to build a small PC that I can take with me to the LAN in June. I've been browsing Newegg, and it seems I can get most everything I want for around $560, not including a hard drive and optical drive, which I believe I already have.

I was looking at a Shuttle ST20G5 barebones Socket 939 system, with a Sempron 3100+, 1GB of Kingston ValueRAM, and an eVGA GeForce 6800 256MB video card.

See this wish list on Newegg: https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=2000355&WishListTitle=LAN+Rig

I'm looking for suggestions/changes/etc. Or, "that just won't work," is good as well. Haha. Anything cheaper? I like cheaper. I don't have to buy from Newegg either. I just like shopping there first. Heh.

I'll probably use this as a media PC afterward. Though, that won't play as big a role as being able to game halfway decently. :aol:

Thanks for your help!

I think you might do better with these items!

    Case:

    Mobo:

    CPU:

    AMD Athlon 64 3700+

You will get a better PC and save $20 minus shipping fees from newegg :)

I know you love how I squezzed my CPU in there:)

Tempting on your processor. It may be an option, but I'll wait for a couple more replies. ;)

Any particular reason for the Biostar board?

I have used 3 of these boards they are relatively cheap and run like mad have nice onboard Graphics that support SM 3.0 and HDRI so if you want to use the new GPU you can throw it in something else. It has 4 dim slots which give plenty of room to expand and supports the new SATA and IDE speeds. It is just an all around good board for the price.

One thing to check is I think the PSU on both the shuttle and Arie are 20 pin and not 24 pin. Might need to find a different mobo that supports a 20 pin setup

Gotcha. I had a bad experience once with Biostar that left a nasty taste in my mouth, but I'm willing to give them another shot.

I wonder how well the onboard video would play games for the time being.

I played some BF2 online on Low on it , just make sure to have extra ram :) as the onboard chip will use as much ram as you give it :)

Haha. I think I'll still buy the extra video card. Assuming I'm able to afford this thing.

Just finished building the kegerator. So, my funds should be returning shortly. OMG, more beer! Byes!

Sorry for the delay. I guess I missed your 3700+. I'm sure it went to a good home. =)

So, I'm almost decided, and I've got it much cheaper now.

I'm going to use the Biostar motherboar you suggested.

This memory (Unless someone has a legitimate complaint about it): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231027

    An Athlon64 3000+: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103537

And I'll move my video card from my main rig over before the LAN, and return it to my main rig when I get home. Since it has onboard video, I can use that for other things.

As for the case: I really like the Antec a lot, but will that power supply support this stuff? Also, I found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144161

It's an Aspire case. It has a 420W PSU, which seems a little fishy to me. It's also slightly cheaper than the Antec. I'm assuming I'd be better off with the 300W Antec than the 420W no-name.

    Thanks!

If you really want to spean about $120 more you can get a killer cpu from m :)

    I have a 4000+ for $250 :)

You know I have heard good things on those Aspire cases.... and aspire makes Kick ass PSU's I use a few of their models in 90% of my builds.... my main rig now has a 480W aspire PSU :)

Haha. It's probably going to be a media PC after the LAN, so a 4000+ would be amazing overkill. But, thanks. ;)

Hmmm. I may have to go with the Aspire then. I kind of like the little display on the front too. Haha.

//Edit: Looks like I'm going with the window. Time to find a decent SATA drive.
