Computer Boots Every Day Same Time

I have a problem with a computer that I believe is a virus. It's a Compaq computer running Windows XP sp2, Mcaffe antivirus. It does a hard boot every day at the same time. The first few times it happened, I thought it might be overheating or something. After observing it over time, I found it happens exactly the same time every day; to the minute and second. It's not using the system time to do this either. When the clocks changed a week or so ago, the computer just booted exactly one hour later (really same time). Anyone have any ideas what this is, and how to kill it?

Check in the BIOS under Power Management (or something similar) and see if there is a timer set to reboot the machine at a preset time. Most BIOS' come with the capability for an "Auto On" feature.

I've already done that. There's nothing in there set to do anything like that.

Not much in your log. Just a few minor entries...

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.C-SPAN.ORG
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.contractor.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.verizon.net

If you did not put those in your trusted zones, remove them...

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    Click Fix Checked

Reboot and run this online scan:

    Panda ActiveScan

    - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

Those entries in my trusted zone I know about, and they're not the problem. I downloaded that Panda Scan, and had a lot of problems getting through it. I have 9 disk drives on that computer, more than a terabyte of data. It ran for 24 hours, and then reboot before it was done. I took the external drives offline, and waited to see if it still would reboot, and it did. So I knew the problem wasn't in the drives that were offline. I ran Panda again. It still didn't finish before it rebooted again. I went and got the full version of the Panda Software, and installed it. Panda found several Trojan viruses, and a worm. It cleaned those up, and I haven't rebooted in 5 days. Its funny that Mcafee, NAV, or NAI didn't prevent or find the these viruses. They were old viruses too; nothing new. Problem solved though. Thanks for the input.

    Regards,
    Joe

If your computer is back to normal, could we mark this resolved?

    Glad it is fixed. :)
