Hard drive keeps spinning with no apps running

Hello:
Hoping you guys can help me again. My daughter's IBM laptop T30 running Windows XP Pro is continually spinning the hard rive with no apps running. The CPU fluctuates greatly anywhere from 5%-100% every few seconds. That is with only the startup processes running (appr. 45).

I have Norton System works and have run my maintenance on the machine including defragging, no viruses, no spyeare that Norton, Spybot, Adaware or MS Antispy are showing. The machine is working OK but the hard drive keeps spinning and the CPU utilization is really high. Any ideas? Below is a HJT log just in case that shows anything. Thanks in advance for your help.
