I attempted to follow skywalker45 instructions. I did not have the same files to delete in the end. My bubble incon by the clock is gone, but my desktop is still all white?

thank you for replying to my problem...I really appreciate it. I cant seem to get by step one ...the server is busy....and it states that the file my be blocked by the firewall?

should I proceed to step 2?

OK..I followed the steps required to rid my computer of this thing. But ..I can not get jottis malware scan to read the c:\system\regserv.exe file? It says the malware is blocking the scan?

I also can not delete this file while in windows explorer. I will post a new hijack log

OOpss. I forgot to tell you whats up...... I had the "your computer is infected virus. I followed the same procedure given to drofnasnella by skywalker. However some of the files to fix in the hijack log were not the same. The end result is that the red bubbble icon is gone, but my desktop is still all white...and I assume the malware is still on my computer. The panda scan keeps finding the virus and spyware.

The file in question is in c:\windows\system\regserv.exe

jotti can not scan this....and I can not delete it while in safe mode in explorer

Hopefully, we can get this sorted for you. I'm going to post out a fix for you so please follow them carefully. You also don't have an Anti-Virus or Firewall, but i'll show you some free ones.

We need to view hidden files and folders:

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.

• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Find and Delete the following, if found:

Please download Ad-Aware SE and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.

1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

• General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
• Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

Click Proceed.

3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left

• Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
• Select "Search for low-risk threats"
• Select "Perform full system scan"
• Click Next

4) When the scan has completed, select Next.

• In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
• Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
• Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
• Restart the computer.

After scanning with Ad-Aware, please scan with SpyBot - Search & Destroy


Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from here.

1. Download and Install Spybot S&D (if you haven't already), accept the Default Settings
   
2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'.
   Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
   
3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
   
4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the updates.
   
5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems'
   
6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' entries, bold 'BLACK' entries and 'GREEN' entries in the window
   
7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
   
8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
   
9. REBOOT normally to complete the scan and clear memory.

but even after I made the changes to see hidden files and folders...I could not delete the file...c:\windows\system\regserv.exe........I am told it is use by another program?

Go into Safe Mode and have a try. To get into Safe Mode, do the following:

Reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

If you still cannot delete the file, then do this:

• Right-click > Properties
• Uncheck the Read-only Attribute if it has a tick next to it.
• Try deleting it again.

If you still can't, reboot into normal mode and let me know

I also ran hijackthis in safe mode and deleted the 04-hklm..run windowsupdateR file........

Have you tried changing your wallpaper? Have you tried this:

Go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


Reboot and post a new HJT log. Make sure you have the above programs too.

thank you ...I have a security bundle that my ISP provides. It comes with a firewall and anti-spyware and antivirus..? Is the Telus security bundle not working?

right.......I downloaded and installed..zone alarm and agv.
I ran adaware and spybot search and destroy. and rebooted after each.

When my computer boots to the desktop the background comes up correct (blue background) only for a moment, then it reverts back to a white screen.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so immediately. This is a necessary step to kill the infection!

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Have you tried changing your desktop manually?

On your desktop: Right-Click > Properties > Desktop < under background, choose a desktop and click Apply > OK > reboot your computer.

Let me know if that worked.

Please print these instructions out and do the following:

1) Boot into Safe Mode

2) Ensure hidden files and folders are viewable

3) Find and Delete the following file:

• C:\WINDOWS\uninstDsk.exe << this file

4) Reboot back into Normal Mode

5) * Start Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then select the Internet Options menu option.

* Click on the Programs tab and then click the Reset Web Settings button.

* Press the Apply button and then OK.

* Click on the Start button and then click Run.

* Type control.exe in the Open: field and press enter on your keyboard.

* When in the Control Panel double-click on the Display icon.

* Click on the Desktop tab and then click on the Customize Desktop button.

* Click on the Web tab and under Web Pages you should see an entry that says Security Info or something similar. If it is there, select the entry and press the Delete button.

* Press the OK button and the Apply button and then the OK button again.

6) Let me know how it goes and then we can get you a free Anti-Virus and Firewall.

I have downloaded and have up and running zone alarm and agv. I still have my ISP Telus security bundle...includes anti virus and firewall. I think I should uninstall this?

Should I also keep webroot spy sweeper up and running?

Also...I followed the instructions for basic clean up rules...while cleaning out the temp files...I found I could not delete certain files ..returned the message...ZLTO2b1c is being used by another person or program...same for a file called Perfib_Perfodata_..............So I booted into safe mode and emptied out the temp folders successfully....but I did not empty the recycle bin while in safe mode......after booting back up the recycle bin showed empty?

Please do. Having two Anti-Virus programs and Firewalls can conflict, which can cause more problems.

Should I also keep webroot spy sweeper up and running?

Might as well. When the trial has finished, you can safely uninstall it.

Also...I followed the instructions for basic clean up rules...while cleaning out the temp files...I found I could not delete certain files ..returned the message...ZLTO2b1c is being used by another person or program...same for a file called Perfib_Perfodata_..............So I booted into safe mode and emptied out the temp folders successfully....but I did not empty the recycle bin while in safe mode......after booting back up the recycle bin showed empty?

I'm not too sure why that happened. Hopefully, it shouldn't be a problem.
