There are a number of reasons why this could have happened, most of which are the result of a recently installed program causing trouble. What was the last thing you installed and/or modified before the problem started?
Once you've closed the error message window, click Ctrl-Alt-Delete to brink up Task Manager. Go to the "Applications" tab and click on "New Task..." (in the lower right-hand corner). Then type in explorer.exe - then hit Enter and see if your desktop returns.
