Getting Started on Fedora Core 5

Finally got going on Fedora Core 5 and now I'm stuck once more, I can't seem to get gonig with the multi media, I have installed MPlayer, RealPlayer, Totem, xime & Audio player and can't get my DVD movies to play? Message says; "You do not have decoder installed to handle this file" WOW! Linux is harder than I thought, Need help once more. Thanks

fc5? last time i used fedora was core 3. lol. im gonna go check it out and see what they've done, how does the gui look?

You're going to need some more libraries that aren't supposed to be installed by default due to licensing/copyright issues. You're going to need libdvdread and libdvdcss, not sure how you install them in Fedora but check your package manager to see if they're listed.

You can get the libdvdread and libdvdcss software as well as a bunch of other interesting stuff for Fedora Core from the DAG repository. this FAQ
shows how to install support for it and how to use the repository.

I like the Gui it's cool, I just can't get it to run smoth for my Multi media. Got alot of work to get them running. fvs

Problem I have is there is some conflicts with Totem and I can't use MPlayer or RealPayer
even though their install in my applications they wont run? I can play my cd disk's with Totem, but can't get any DVD videos or RealPlayer plugins on the web, Also can't play any DVD videos with MPlayer.:(

I haven't gotten browser integration with media players to work on any distro, ever. It hasn't really been a priority. What conflicts are there with Totem?

this guide always worked on ubuntu, not sure if it would help you with fedora.

Hi drasor, Got bad news, After running 5 or 6 days, I suddenly lost my internet connection in Fedora 5, I was dual booting between XP & fedora, When I tried to get on the net with Fedora, it said it lost the server. Now I can't get out on Fedora. I've tried all that was sucjested to me by the good people on all of these forums, No Luck, I was told to try and configure my Network static which it is now. here's a look at it.

Sorry for the confusion: I have fully working offline multimedia support. I was referring to the sites that have Windows Media Player and Quicktime frames in the site and don't offer separate downloads that I could never get working. It hasn't been a priority for me though, I can live without that stuff. Totem has perfect DVD playback for me, mPlayer likes to crash on chapter changes but between the two I can play any file.

Running a static configuration is a pain, my feelings are that if you can't get DHCP working then you have bigger problems. Is there any particular reason you're using Fedora? Around here our favorite distros are Gentoo, Debian, and Ubuntu in increasing order of newbie-friendliness.

Static was suggested to me because of the problems DHCP couldn't work.
I choose fedora 5 core because I thought it was user friendly, How is Gento?

Gentoo is somewhat advanced but requires a bit of knowledge on Linux in general. The documentation is excellent but I really can't reccommend it for beginners. Right now I'm recommending Ubuntu. Give it a try, tell us what you think.
