I've heard some rumors that Microsoft is now requiring people who upgrade their motherboards to buy a fresh copy of XP. Is this true or not?

No. You will have to go through the activation process again. If you've activated it numerous times you might have to call MS and get a special code to get going, but it is not really a big problem.

When you re-authentiate and if the hardware changed a lot, MS may require to call their 1-800 number. No biggy... be honest and let them know you had to replace the motherboard... Only take about 10 minutes.

Be sure to say the old mobo fried though, which makes it legal for a motherboard replacement while using an OEM version of XP.

Good, no worries then. I had just heard rumors that MS was getting very picky. The copy of XP I have I bought 2 years ago and have not had to re-activate at all. It should be a breeze.

BTW- the copy of XP I have is a retail version, not OEM.
