XP won't start-Registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32

edited April 2006 in Hardware
throughout the night, i left my laptop while it was downloading some media. the next morning, i went to turn on my laptop and the normal welcome/log in screen showed up. i wasn't able to log in so i turned it off and back on again. and from then on, it didn't pass the window xp loading screen. it would reboot and go to the loading screen again. reboot, and repeat. once in awhile, before it reboots, i see a blue screen with the message:

STOP: C0000218 {Registry file failure}
The Registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32|Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate.

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

i've pressed f5 and tried ALL the options and nothing works. nothing.

please help

thanks
