How to remove printer Icons?

Hi everyone.

I am busy working on a pseudo EOS for a dedicated DAW. I have two subsystems that I'd really like to strip out. The first being the printer shell. At the very least I'd like to remove the printer Icons from control panel and Statr>Settings without removing control panel. I have been trying different things with Resource Hacker, and Axarscan hex editor but nothing has worked. Oddly there seems to be no info on this on the internet at all.

I've had a bit of success by removing print .dlls, printer references in registry and even printer strings in explorer. Can anyoneone point me in a better direction?

You can quite easily remove the printer icons from the control panel using TweakUI, one of Microsofts Power Toys. As for complete shell cleansing, I can't suggest anything off the top of my head, but I guess your best bet is to systematically remove each extension manually one by one, by deleting their registry entries, but you'll need to find a websource which can help you locate them. You'll just need to do a bit of searching, or alternatively try and find the registry entries yourself by performing searches using Regedit, with select keywords, like 'Print' for example. But it seems you have done a bit of that already, so...

Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Hey Spinner.
I'd prefer not to install tweak UI if possible and "hardwire" the fix. If tweak UI does infact remove printer Icon AND keep control panel still visable that's encouraging news.

Yes i have done quite extensive registry removal and I've deleted strings in explorer.exe for a truly dead" printer shell. But those two pesky printer Icons...:banghead:

oops. Forgot to mention this is windows 98SE with win95 explorer. Not sure if it's friendly to new Tweak UI.

The latest tweakUI is for Windows XP only, but you can get the 98 version from a Windows 98 CD, I'll put it up in the downloads section in a few days, if you haven't got a 98 CD handy.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there is a chance that any changes you make in tweakUI, will still remain in effect after the program has been removed, but you'll need to try that out, but even the old 98 version has the ability to control what is displayed in the control panel.

Let me know how you get on.

    Cheers

Ya know, It was so long ago since I used tweak UI win 98 It's worth a shot but I know that the one on the CD was buggy and the update available from Microsoft is better. I'll get it on my own and let you know. And yes you can uninstall it and keep the changes.
