Trojan infection - HTJ log included

Hello,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to assist me. My computer has been infected with what appears to be a trojan virus. I have tried some of the methods of erradicating this virus using information from other posts.

The BitDefender revealed: Infected with: MemScan:Trojan.Small.W
and Infected with: Trojan.Downloader.Small.DAC

Hi, Welcome ot Short-Media

What is being detected is in your Java Cache and system restore, which we can clean fairly easily for you.

To clean your Java cache, please do the following:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Java.

In the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files click on the Delete Files... button.

In the next window, make sure all THREE boxs are checked and press OK.


We will clean your system restore at the end, once we remove some entries with HJT.

1. C:\DOCUME~1\Ibrahim\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

2. C:\DOCUME~1\Ibrahim\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

Create a new folder on your Desktop and call it HJT. Next, redownload HJT and put it into the new folder. Create a new log and post it here

Hi!

Thank you for your speedly response. When I go to java plug-in, there is a basic tab, but not a general tab. The basic tab has two sections, one under the title "Java console" and the other section dealing with showing the java in the system tray. I looked at the other tabs, but none of them mention a temporary file folder.

Lets try this:

Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

• Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
• Click Start > Control Panel.
• Click Add/Remove Programs.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.

If that works, continue on from my previous post.

Please download Ad-Aware SE and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.

1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

• General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
• Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

Click Proceed.

3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left

• Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
• Select "Search for low-risk threats"
• Select "Perform full system scan"

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'.
   Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
   
3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
   
4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the updates.
   
5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems'
   
6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' entries, bold 'BLACK' entries and 'GREEN' entries in the window
   
7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
   
8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
   
9. REBOOT normally to complete the scan and clear memory.

Download Ewido Anti-Malware

• Install Ewido
• When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck:
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Once installed, open Ewido
• You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on the Start Update button.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • If you are having problems with the updater, you can manually update Ewido » Ewido manual updates.
• After it has finished, close Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please oepn Ewido.

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan. (Please don't use the computer while Ewido is scanning)
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi!

Every time I try to delete the file that you requested it will not remove it R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway). The desktop still has a white box in the upper left corner that will not go away upon restarting. The computer does also seem to load faster than before, but a slight bit slower than before - maybe due to the extra programs that have been downloaded to eliminate the virus??

Lets try removing the R0 entry in Safe Mode:

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
Click Fix Checked

Reboot back into Normal Mode and post a new HJT log.

I don't think that would have caused it, although it may have had a slight affect. However, you can disable items on startup through MSCONFIG; this will help speed up boot time. Let me know if you want further help with this.

Glad its gone! What did you do exactly to remove it?


Lets clean out the infected system restore points and create new points.

Go to Start | Run | type msconfig | Press Enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot! Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created automatically.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Hi!

I am not sure what I did to close the box. When I was trying to catch a screenshot using the Alt+Printscreen keys, I inadvertantly moved the white box with my mouse. I clicked the close box in the left corner at the top of the white box and it disappeared!

Thank you for all your help. The computer is running like normal again.

Here are some measures you can take to stay more secure online:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC(s) from being usurped by undesireables. If you don't have a Firewall, then choose one from the list here

Install an Anti-Virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often. If you don't have an Anti-Virus program, choose one from the list here

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete Files... button; check the Delete all offline content box and press OK. Next, click the Delete Cookies... button and press OK

Go to "Start" -> "Run" and type in the box: "cleanmgr" press OK. Select the drive where your Operating System is installed (Default is C:) and press OK. Let Disk Cleanup scan your system for files to remove (it takes a few minutes!). On the next screen make sure these 3 options are checked and then press "OK" to remove:

• Temporary Files
• Temporary Internet Files
• Recycle Bin

Also, go to Start > Find/Search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents from the following folders:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\temp <-- if you have one.
Note: Empty contents but don't delete the folder(s) itself.

Clear out temp files from the following location. Change "username" to whatever you have on your computer.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin!

Hide system files
It is very important that system files and folders are hidden again, so that they DO NOT get deleted by mistake. To hide system files and folders, do the following for your operating system...

Windows XP
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, uncheck Do not show hidden files and folders
* Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.


For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run | type msconfig | Press Enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot! Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created automatically.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
