Shift Key Borks New Anti CD-Copy Measures

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
Under normal circumstances, the antipiracy software is automatically loaded onto a Windows machine whenever the Hamilton album is run in a computer's CD drive, making traditional copying or MP3 ripping impossible. However, simply holding down the Shift key prevents Windows' AutoRun feature from loading the copy-protection software, leaving the music free to copy, Halderman said.

Ed note: You have to wonder how much this cost BMG Music to develop, and how much the cost of development was passed on to the consumers.

    WOW, that is even worse than the copy protection that was broken by writing on the bottom of the CD. These companies need to get someone with a brain to develop copy protection systems. Of course, the people with brains are the people that crack these protections and know that they will always be crackable so they would never get a job making the copy protection themselves.

    Autorun = Always off.

    It's just plain annoying, especially if you are trying to do something else at the time.

    Of course, the "copy protection" was probably aimed at the basic computer illiterate folks out there who are the majority. (even though there are many of us who are quite savvy when it comes to computers, for each one of us, there are 10-20 people who have no clue how to find the "any" key on their keyboard...)

    For the masses, the "protection" may work... But I know that when I first read about the new protection scheme, the first thing that popped into my head was, "Gee, I can always just hold shift to stop the autorun, and then rip the songs as I see fit..." as I offered a wry smirk...
