I disagree about maxanon's statement about gaming though. While this thing is not gonna perform at radeon 9700 pro levels, the mobility radeon 9000 will play today's games at a resonable level of performance. I hear that the mobility radeon 9600 is quite amazing as well.

As I've said , the ram IS upgradable on this laptop (the Inspiron 600) - I've upgraded it. You get 2 DDR SODIMM slots. You can put 2x512 in there for 1gb of PC2100 DDR

Yeah, this will be used mostly for school, but I'm not gonna lie. I will do some gaming with it, and I think it'd perform ok. I am looking at the inspiron 600, base model, and then just tossin in an extra 512 of ram and calling it good. Its got everything I want, centrino, decent amount of ram, serial port, decent vid card, and its around 1200$ I think I found my winnah!

Before you order you might also want to check if you can get it cheaper or better "optioned" on the small business site, sometimes dell is reatarded and has stupid deals on one site and not the other. Small businesses for in dell's definition start at 1 person and they don't actually check AFAIK (its too much work to check if a person has a propietorship or such), dell desktops suck but their laptops are solid machines for the price. The base model of the 600 is very nice and it'll fold faster than an XP2000 :D.
