run out of ideas, no link light...

Right, so I'm trying to fix a PC for a friend... I've managed to fix a hard drive problem and a soundcard issue but there's a problem with the network card that's got me copmpletely stumped. I can't get a link light on the LAN connection at all. I've tried a different cable (even though I know the original one works fine) I've tried a different port on my switch (again, I know the original one works) and, this is where it gets weird, I've tried a different network card. The onboard LAN port is the one I tried first, that was a no-go so I took a working card from another machine and tried that...still nothing. Windows detects the card, drivers install fine but it doesn;t detect that I've plugged a network cable into it and I get no link light. Anyone got any ideas?

The board is an ASUS P4S533-VM if that's any help to anyone.

edit: never mind, fixed it.... I had the patch lead on the switch end plugged into an uplink port. On my machine it didn't matter, because my network port is auto-sensing. The onboard port on this machine however isn't autosensing, and neither is the PCI card I was trying it with. Doh!
