Home Network/Email Error (after Windows XP Updates "reinstall")
I hope I can provide enough info to get some help...
I was having difficulty w/failed Windows XP updates, so after much tweaking I finally did a "reinstall" (?) of Windows XP (I can't remember what you call it; theoretically do not lose data but requires the installation CD and takes you to baseline where you have to start updates from scratch...). (I was concerned about security issues...)
Now I've gone and done the @#$% updates through SP-2 + all available ... (sorry about that expletive but damned if it never fails that if I touch a Windows Update something will go wacky that's beyond my ability to fix...) but I've changed my Windows Firewall configuration (I think) and my husband can no longer send email using Outlook 2000 w/Verizon.net. I originally thought it was a port blocking issue (had trouble configuring his Palm to send email), but it dawned on me that the Windows Firewall settings had undoubtedly been changed and are probably the source of the problem.
I did a "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" procedure before the reinstall, but haven't looked to see if it's my best option. My husband connects to our WEP encrypted router wirelessly and I'm not sure which Windows Firewall (Advanced Network Settings/Services/whatever) I need to change. I'd like to be as conservative as possible but he needs to check his email...
[Cox Cable is our local internet provider but he's checking his verizon.net email remotely. We haven't needed to do any special port selection or dynamic DNS stuff for his connection in the past -- not sure if this info is applicable but I had a heck of a time w/his Palm and just wanted to mention it...]
I'd appreciate any help I could get -- We're both using Windows XP (I'm using Home Edition on our "main" computer). My husband uses Outlook 2000 for email. Please let me know if you need additional info. Thanks very much. [I really need to fix this as he's convinced (I think) that I can't touch a computer without something going wrong. Unfortunately he's sort of right -- but my intentions are good -- just can't seem to keep updates/malware checks from messing with existing programs -- hard to convince him that they're worth pursuing...)
