Primary Hard Drive 1 not found at softboot

I have a Dell 4550 computer running XP PRO with 2 hard drives. Here's the problem: When I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL, (soft boot), I get the error "Primary hard disk drive 1 not found, press F1 to continue......". If I press F1, Drive 0 boots up ok, windows runs, but cant find drive 1. If I do a hard boot, (power down and restart), everything works fine. Both drive are recognized! One other note, when the drive 1 isn't found, the CMOS screen does not see the drive either. I work on computers all the time at work and home, but this ones got me puzzled! PLEASE HELP!!!
