Black Screen Before Windows Boot

edited May 2006 in Hardware
Hi everyone,

I was on my computer and the screen suddenly went black. Upon reboot, there is a black screen before anything displays. The monitor appears to be disconnected even though it isn't. This might be a video card failure, but I'm not sure. Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks!

Alain

One of my machines has always done this. I believe that it is a driver issue. As long as windows (w2k in my case) loads fine I don't care.

The problem is that Windows does not boot. Nothing is being displayed on my screen, from boot. I can't get into the BIOS or anything. Any ideas?

Check that the motherboard is starting up.

You can check if the CPU is up & running, by entering the "Caps-Lock" key.
The Caps-Lock led will alternate if the CPU is running.

If not, you have check the motherboard status Led's and watch how far it will go in the boot up sequence, before it shuts down.

Also make an CMOS reset, it might help.

Sometimes it is caused by an failing PSU or memory (try with only one memory at the time).

Please check and get back to us.
