CD-R and DVD-R technologies are a bit misleading. Although CD and DVD can last over a 100 years, their recordable counter parts fair much worse. Is there a solution? Yes there is.

I'm disappointed. I thought that the solution would be bacterial DNA storage or teleportation to a locked vault on the moon, but it's so much more mundane.

What causes the media to fail? Exposure to light, heat, oxygen, humidity and rough handling.

OK, now all I have to do is put all my burned CDs/DVDs in a place with no light, thats cold, has no air or humidity, with lots of padding...:skeptic:

You also should use gold cd-r's they last slightly longer.

edit: I still have a 2X gold disk that has windows 98 first edition on it and it works fine its at least 7 years old probably older.
