No boot ...

Ok here's the short of it ...

Pump died last week but system still ran once I terminate f@h and clocked down to normal frequency and normal to lower voltage ...I was surprised at how low the temps were w/ no waterflow. At any rate ...the system still ran fine.

I got the new D5 pump and installed it last night but in the meantime I removed the IHS. I did scratch the wafer on the outer edge and little and it shows a little gold color but that's about it ...doesn't seem to be damaged.

I get everything hooked up and I turned the system on to flush bubbles out and everything went well so I held the switch to boot back down. I restarted after adding more fluid and the system started for a few seconds and powered down again.

What's happening is the power supply shuts off about 3-5secs after it is turned off ...the psu light goes off and immediately comes back on again after shut-down.

I'm thinking it could be a few things but not certain. Perhaps the waterblock isn't making adequate contact with the cpu because it sets about 1/16" or so lower than normal since the IHS is not longer there. That could possibly cause the overheat sensor to trigger. Other than that it could be a drop of (non-conductive) fluid got somewhere ...or the pump should be on a dedicated molex ...or video needs reseating.

At any rate ...I'm aware that the cpu may be fried but I'm in denial and I want to try everything I can think of before I throw in the towel. When I get home I'll clear the bios of and try and get better contact.

Any opinions appreciated ..

Thanks
csimon

Tried clearing cmos and one stick of ram still same symptoms.

Next I'll try better cpu contact w/ the waterblock.

    better contact = boot.

When I pulled the waterblock off the AS5 showed no signs of contact ...so I removed the gomets completely, made good contact, and eureka.

So now let's see what damage was done.

It's not looking good. It's running but no video ...no boot. I've tried reseating the vid card but still it's still the same ...no post no bios.
I'm wondering if mudd might have something up his sleeve ...any ideas mudd?

You made good contact between the cooler and the IHS, and still no boot.
Check all cables and post some picture of the scratch, if you can.

And yes dont forget that the CPU needs the FAN input, otherwise it will shut down.
Please install the FAN and see if it helps, then disconnect the fan readings in the bios, if it's possible.

    Thanks Esso ...
Good contact between cooler and cpu and IHS was removed just prior.
I can post pictures later since we're headed out the door to the movies ...it's my 4th year wedding anniversary.
The fan input is connected and working well.
Doesn't get into bios I don't think ...I get no signal to the monitor.

Muddocktor lives fairly close to me ...I'm hoping he has either a spare rig to try the cpu in or a spare cpu to try in my rig.

Trying to get a grip on the idea of losing a $500 processor atm. :nudge:

I'd try a spare PSU while you're at it. If everything else seems to be at least running (even if you can't tell if it's running right) it could be that a rail has gone semi-AWOL on you.

    Fingers still crossed. :thumbup

    Have you tried in order at the same time;

    turn off PSU power
    remove battery (20 minutes minimum)
    cmos jumper to clear position
    put jumper back to normal
    put back battery
    turn PSU power back on
hold down "Insert" key then power up while holding key down
if no go then turn off and re-try without "insert" key

Well even if things turn out to be ok (which I highly doubt) I will never ever ever again remove and IHS. I'm feeling pretty stupid.

I didn't try with the insert key ...not even sure which is the insert key.

    Right above the Delete key.

What does holding the "insert" key do?

What does holding the "insert" key do?
It bypasses all "Halt on Errors" comands from the BIOS.
