monitor other users in LAN

Hi all,

just wanted to ask about any program or technique which helps me to monitor..the bandwidth usage of other users in my LAN (their download and upload rates)..to compare it with mine at the same moment,,

why I am doing this? that's becasue I am in a LAN of 6 users..we are in a network of DSL speed of 512 KB..
the problem is when all the acive ips in the lan are 3 (including mine) are using the internet bandwidth..sometimes I have almost no bandwidth !
I even couldn't open google.com !
so I just wanted to know if someone is using some software for limiting bandwidth for my ip?

thanks,,
Sherif

You would have to have something at the edge of the LAN (a router, for example) that everyone's traffic would pass through on its way to the internet. For our LANs we run a Linksys WRT54G router with OpenWRT Linux on it. Inside that we run monitoring software that can show us rough bandwidth usage for each active IP.

Since most networks are switched today, traffic only goes where it needs to so you're not able to see the traffic of your friends unless its intended for you.

Our solution is somewhat cheap, but involves Linux. The routers are around $70 (might have to buy used, the good revisions are rare). OpenWRT is free and so is most of what you put on it, including monitoring software. The only down side is it's a little harder to set up.

    Hope that helps.
