New to overclocking. Getting a New PC.. Cant decide.

edited May 2006 in Hardware
Hey, i'm new to this world of overclocking, i want a pc mainly for gaming, multitasking and encoding video.

The pc i'm looking at is the following specification:

· case: Thermaltake Tai Chi
· mobo: ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe 939pin Socket AMD Athlon64FX/Athlon64/Sempron ATX
· cpu: AMD Athlon x2 4800+
· ram: Corsair 2x1GB DDR400 C2 Pro series Kit (TWINX2048-3200C2PRO)
· gfx: ASUS Radeon Extreme X1900XT - 512DDR3, PCI-E, HDTV, DVI (EAX1900XT/2DHTV/512M)
· hdd: Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2 - 7200.9rpm, 8MB Cache (ST3250824AS
· cdrom: LiteOn 52X32X52 Internal CD writer Black
· DVDrw: ASUS 1608P 16X Dual layer DVD writer Black
· sound: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi XTREME

It's a little pricey so i'm thinking about either going for a AMD 4400+ or a Opteron 170. I want stable speeds of around 2.6-2.8

Also i'm really keen on that tai chi case so dont talk me out of it :P

I would recomend the Opteron 170 as it will do what you want. I am also recomending getting a good quality power supply! For what you are spending it would be totally foolish to trust those parts to a $50 PSU that could take all of it down the drain in an instant.

I used eXtreme PSU Calculator v1.3 and found out ill be using just over 600W

Theres none of those at the place i'm buying from, will the Thermaltake 680W Silent Pure Power PSU do the trick?

    Where are you?

    You couldn't buy somewhere else?

I am running an Opteron 170 @ 1.7, 6 hard drives, 2 optical drives, an X800XL and 5 120mm fans on my PC Power & Cooling 510 SLI-PFC 510W Power Supply. But while it is rated at 510 Watts it peaks out at over 600W.

It all looks good now but do not get the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi XTREME as Creative is in the crapper with it.

Yeah, everything looks good except the X-Fi. I've also read of problems with the X-Fi on high end systems giving problems. Creative is supposed to be working on a fix, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on them.

One other thing you can look for and see if it's out down there yet is to see if there are any of the Seagate 7200.10 series drives in 320 GB size yet. This is their newest and greatest drive series and it performs a little better than the 7200.9 series according to the Anandtech article I read this morning.
