What kind of music is used in game trainers / hax?

Just want to clarify, I'm not looking for where to find any of this stuff, so I hope I'm not violating the forum rules or anything (I don't think I am...).

Anyway, I've always wondered what genre of music is used in those trainers / cd-key generators released by the various software hacking groups (deviance, etc.). It sounds like a polyphonic techno, and I've loved hearing it ever since the days of the Amiga. I'd like to know the specific name of that type of music, and see if I can rustle some up.

Groups like JiOO, DEV, RZR and FLT "Hire" (For lack of a better phrasing) their keygen designers for both their programming knowledge, and their talent in packaging the final product. Packagers are very important, so the stuff is almost always custom, but the tunes are pretty catchy.

That said, you might try "Trance midis" or "Techno midis" on Google. And before Enverex comes by, you might try "MOD" instead of MIDI. ;)

(Please don't beat me with a tack hammer, <s>super mods</s> adjudicators.)

Don't worry man, if the moderations start flying on here, you can use the Bitter Crumpet as leverage, and I can use that game review I wrote 2 years ago!

And if that fails, I have a safehouse in the Rockies that has 2 year's worth of food and electricity. I'm always prepared for moderation on forums.

ANYWAY, thanks for the info, I'm off to Google now.

As long as you don't make me try to drink the punch for enlightenment, we're cool.

Eh, all I have is some Diet Coke, but it tastes like it'd do the same thing.

Midi's will sound like ass, heh. Something else you may want to look up are "chiptunes" or "cracktros" which are the names of the tracks used for the cracked screens on Amiga/C64 stuff and the latter being the actual animation things themselves.

Speaking of chiptunes (Good call Ben), you might look for an artist named "DTrax/Dualtrax/DT" or anything written for the "NMG," "ORiON" or "RZR1911" teams. They use some of the best chiptune writers in the world. An artist named "Zalza" is great too, as is "Paledeth" who collaborates with Dualtrax on occasion.

This comes from an ORiON keygen* for a program I will not specify; it is written by Dualtrax for the ORi team specifically. I have a LOT more of these if you want them; I'm a huge chiptune fan.

You can find more of this kind of stuff by searching for cracktros as Ben mentioned, or loaders, or "Demonscene" where people make an art of this stuff. Teams of 2-10 stuff more amazing software into 64kb than most game programmers stuff into 5 DVDs.

    * I don't know how close we're riding to the rules with this thread, but I apologise to moderation if we cross the line.

    //EDITS:
    #1: Added "Zalza"
    #2: Added "Paledeth"
#3: Added Cracktros, Loaders and Demoscene
    #4: Added moderation disclaimer
    #5: Added info on demosceners

On that same note going back a little, some others (although if you're familiar with the scene you'll probably already know them) you could look up would be Crystal, Fairlight, Skidrow, Anthrox, Paradox, Ministry, Quartex and DefJam. Those obviously aren't all of them but they were the major ones. I think "polyphonic techno" is probably the best definition of the genre you're going to be able to get.

This site seems to have a large selection of tracker files including those from cracktros (ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/).
