Student get sued for Shift Key Anti CD-Copy Article

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
An update on the news from Wednesday Oct. 8. The student that published an article on how to defeat the "anti CD-Copy" software by holding down the Shift key.... Well, the software company, SunnComm Technologies Inc, is suing him over the article...

[blockquote]In a statement, SunnComm Technologies Inc. said it would sue Alex Halderman over the paper, which said SunnComm's MediaMax CD-3 software could be blocked by holding down the "Shift" key on a computer keyboard as a CD using the software was inserted into a disc drive.

"SunnComm believes that by making erroneous assumptions in putting together his critical review of the MediaMax CD-3 technology, Halderman came to false conclusions concerning the robustness and efficacy of SunnComm's MediaMax technology," it said. [/blockquote]

Now thats a steamy pile. Instead of suing the kid, why don't you make copy protection software that WORKS.

...but yet there are people on the internet who will gladly teach me(or anyone) directions on how to make bombs? Yet some guy for just telling people to push the "shift" key gets sued? The RIAA are the ones hurting themselves now, not music piracy. You can't go sue your target crowd(or old grannys) then expect your music sales to go up.

They're gonna have a hard time suing him for that. Freedom of speech and what not. I can tell you how to do just about anything, you can't sue me for that, you can be sued for doing it...but I don't see how you can be sued for talking about it.

    Thats like preemptive moderating!

I´m glad i live in the part of the world where you actually have to do something illegal to even have a chance getting sued.

He should just counter-sue them for just being plain stupid. So many ways to argue it, it's not even funny.
