What is your favorite tweak for O.S./Hardware Acceleration/Performance?

Just wondering what people have found to be the most effective method of making a system more efficient while also maintaining stability. Such as software tweak, swap file allocation, memory size, ram drive usage, raid arrays, drive types and so on...

Thanks in advance.

I always insist on two hard drives in my PC; the swap file occupies the first 1.5GB on the second HDD, and as such is the fastest possible swap file a PC can have due to the RPMs at the inside edge of an HDD platter.

For Windows XP, I immediatly disable the following services:

    'System Restore' disabled
    ‘Indexing Service' disabled
    ‘UPNP SSD Discovery' disabled
    ‘Remote Registry' disabled
    ‘Help and Support' disabled
    ‘Fast User Switching' disabled

System Restore and the indexing service can make a large dent in your system performance.

Thax's suggestion about the SWAP file is very good. If you do not have two drives, you can also create a small partition just for the SWAP file. This wont increase the STR of the SWAP, but it will help keep the swap file out of the data partition and from becoming fragmented.
