new to forum... looking for some help

I picked up a trojan downloader around a couple of weeks ago and thought I had it removed. Anti-virus cought it and spyware removal seemed to have worked but after a power outage this week it is back with a vegence. Home page is hijacked, system tray too, pop-ups everywhere, system performance severely affected. Norton, Anti-Virus, MS Antispyware, Ewido anti-maleware, BHO Demon, all used without sucess. Any suggesteions are greatly appreciated. I'm posting a HJT log for review if anyone has ideas. Thanks:

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Thanks again, already starting to notice improvements. The SmitFraudFix tool left my system in a Selective Startup mode. Should I leave it in that state for now or return to a normal start up mode?

HijackThis is currently not in a permanent folder, we will need to move it to one.
    Click My Computer, then C:\
    In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder. You can rename the folder to "HijackThis".
Please now move HijackThis.exe into this new folder.

Once in this new, permanent folder, and before we start the HijackThis fixing, we will need to disable ewido anti-malware temporarily so that they will not interfere with the fix.

From the system tray, right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
Or From within Ewido, under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.

Now lease start up HijackThis and place a checkmark by the following entries:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D7F30B62-8269-41AF-9539-B2697FA7D77E} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [D32C624A] C:\WINNT\TEMP\~B7DC.tmp.exe

Close all other windows except HijackThis and press Fix Checked. Then close HijackThis and restart the computer. You can re-enable ewido's real-time protection now.

Also I notice you have WildTangent's software on your computer. Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including:
    • Operating System Version
    • CPU Type and Speed
    • Memory Amount
    • Video Card type and Driver Version
    • Sound Card type and Driver Version
    • DirectX Version
    • Location that the Web Driver was installed from
    Information from: www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtml

If you want to remove WildTangent, please go to Start, Settings, Control Panel then double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on the WildTangent selection and uninstall depending on the operating system. Then follow the onscreen prompts.

After all this is done, please rescan with HijackThis and post the new log in your next reply.

    Thanks,

Not sure about the Wild Tangent Web Driver. I did some simple gaming through Yahoo and maybe aquired the driver that way. In any event Wild Tangent was not visible in the Add/Remove Programs Manager. I'll read up on the driver through the link you provided and see if I can find some helpful info.
Additionally, and I'm not sure if this may be related to malware or not, but I have tried to reinstall service pack 2 for windows XP and recieve an access denied error. I checked the registry editor to ensure proper permissions wre enabled which they appear to be. Could the malware have affected registry items so that I am not able to install a windows update?

Please do not install SP2 for now. Installing SP2 before your system is clean may cause problems later on, so please refrain from doing so for the moment.

Anyway, your HijackThis log appears clean. However, since HijackThis does not scan the entire system, I will now have you run Panda ActiveScan.
    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

Your scan showed one of more viruses in your Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache. Delete those by clearing the JRE cache.
To clear the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache:
    • Click Start > Control Panel.
    • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
      -The Java Control Panel appears.
    • Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
    • Click Delete Files.
-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are three options on this window to clear the cache.
      • Delete Files
      • View Applications
      • View Applets
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
    • Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
    • Close the Java Control Panel
You can view those instructions along with graphics Here

After clearing the Java cache, please navigate to and delete the following folders if found:
    c:\program files\MyWay
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.zip
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\
    Now restart the computer.

There is a registry entry that needs to be fixed with a reg fix, but I am inexperienced with that. I will seek help from an expert before getting back with you.

Meanwhile, after doing all the above, please rescan with Panda ActiveScan and post the new log in your next reply. Things should be more or less OK now. :)
