HEXUS has managed to run a complete set of benchmarks for two speed grades of Intel Conroe CPUs in our HEXUS labs and compared their performance to the Presler Extreme Edition 965 and, uniquely, to today's baby from AMD, its Athlon 64 FX-62.

I wouldn't call that a spanking, but it is faster... but i do think having a 65nm shrink and 1033MHz Memory will boost AMD in the lead, also with AMD going 3.2Ghz and 3.4Ghz I don't think the new Core Duo 2 will catch up.

It currently looks like a Socket 939 to current Intel stats.

The AM2 machine had twice as much ram running at higher speeds. The timings were better on the Intel machine which is was a bit strange, you would expect tighter timings with an AMD CPU.

I think the pricing on these chips is also going to sway a lot of people. I've never had an Intel machine at home but I know my next build will start with conroe.

Yeah, from what I've read the pricing on Conroe will be pretty attractive in the lower speed bins. And performance (from what I've seen so far) looks real good too. Conroe is definitely going to make AMD drop prices on the dual core offerings at least.

Im all for that!! I have been looking at building a new computer, but the prices are a bit high for me. I really want to build an opty 170 system, but I dont think my wallet can handle it, not to mention, with all the new goodies comming out, I want to see if I should get it, then if I decide not to, I can pick up the last gen cheaper.
