DNS Error in 1 profile on Windows XP...

I have one profile in Windows XP that is not allowing the user to browse web pages (Internet Explorer 7). The internet connection is there, as the user can download email through Mozilla. I have three other profiles that work fine for web browsing, email, etc.

I have tried the following:

1. Clearing the cache (deleted all cookies, temp files, etc.)
2. Reset Windows defaults for the browser.
3. Run anti-virus and spyware software.
4. Run HiJack This - there doesn't appear to be anything malicious there.

On this profile (and only this profile) I also get a Windows script error that references C:\windows...\temp\NDrxxx.tmp.html and asks if I want to continue running the script. Doesn't seem to matter if I say YES or NO.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Have you tried any other browser than IE7? It's still in beta, so let's rule that out first. :)

I haven't tried another browser. However, I'm using IE7 in all of the other profiles with no issues.

In regedit, delete the following folders:

    HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Winsock
    HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\WinSock2

And reboot your PC. When you get back into your computer, go to:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Settings and right click on the network adapter that that individual uses for an internet connection. Hit properties. Go to Install > Protocol, hit "Have Disk" and point the computer to C:\Windows\inf or c:\winnt\inf, and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Don't select TCP/IP V6. Finish installing the protocol and reboot.

Also, go find that file it references and delete it in Windows explorer.

Lastly, if those fail, see if you can reinstall IE6 SP1 to correct the problem.

When I get to the point in your directions to Install > Protocol my only options are:

    Microsoft TCT/IP version 6
    Network Monitor Driver
    NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

You said to aviod the "version 6" so should I pick one of the others?

If those are your options, you didn't select have disk and enter "c:\windows\inf" or "c:\winnt\inf." Internet Protocol TCP/IP can only be selected as an option if you have followed those steps.

You are correct sir. Thank you. This appears to have solved the internet connection issue within that profile.

The .tmp.htm file appears to be spyware of some sort. It keeps coming back after deletion and if I run it to completion is an ad website. I'll remove it via spyware if possible.

    Thanks for all your help!

Glad I could help. :) I see this very often.. Everything appears to be properly-configured, except there's no internet connection! It's strange.

As for your spyware, read this section of our forums for all the help you need. Follow the guide to the letter, and we'll get you on your way.
