AMD has announced plans to release a new chip for laptops that the company anticipates will challenge Intel's dominance in the segment. AMD estimates that the company will be able to provide 1/3 of the microprocessor market by 2008.
The laptop chip showcased by AMD executives at the company's technology day on Thursday is based on a new design that will help improve laptop battery life. The chip will come out some time in 2007.

"We are introducing a new core design for the mobile space," said Phil Hester, AMD's chief technology officer.

AMD's chips have found their biggest success in server and desktop computers, but many analysts say its mobile offerings lag those of Intel.
