Packets are being sent, but none are received ;_;

edited March 2007 in Science & Tech
I bought a new computer today, and after a few things were fixed (for example, the stupid thing not booting up because of a corrupt file), everything is working perfectly. Except for the internet.

This computer is connected to the internet via a modem, and the other computer is connected to this one via a cross-wire (which is a crappy way to connect, but after spending £352 on a new computer, I kind of can't buy a router, and the only other thing I can use is a stupid wire).

Anyway, after setting up the internet connection wizard about a million times and restarting the computers about a gazillion times, all the connection window says is:

connection

status: connected
duration: xx.xx.xx
speed: 100mbps

activity

sent: xxxx
received: 0

Obviously, this computer's internet connection is working perfectly, but the other's is.. fecked up.

Any idea on what the heck is the problem?

(before I bought the new computer, this had happened to the old one before... no idea how the internet got fixed on that one, though)

Thanks. :)

    Are you running any firewalls?
  • edited June 2006
No. In fact, windows keeps on pissing me off by repeatedly telling me to go get a firewall. :P

Have you configured your TCP/IP settings properly? Are you on the right subnet with the correct IP address?
  • edited June 2006
I don't know for the subnet thing, but I assume that it is correct because my old computer had the same, and it worked.

But now there is another problem - the pop-up balloon is telling me that there is limited or no connectivity, so I don't know what's up with that. It just randomly appeared as I was on the internet. :banghead:

edit: okay, after a bit of googling *cough* just f**king google it much? *cough*, someone had said to try typing in 'netsh winsock reset' and now it says that everything is connected fine. :) Some packets are even being sent! But, er, still no internet connection.

edit again!: and now it's showing up as limited or no connectivity. Shall I just throw the freakin thing out of the window?

ok, go to the command console(start>>run>>"cmd">>[enter]), and type "ipconfig/release", then type in "ipconfig/renew". Then wait about 10 seconds and try your internet again.

Let me know where that gets you. I am assuming you are on either cable or DSL? I may have to tell you computer to acquire ip automatically if worse comes to worse, but the above always gets me linked up after im done jacking with my network.

I tried that ages ago, but it did nothing... actually, I think it's made it worse. Instead of having the normal IP address, it's gone to 162.blah.blah.blah (where blah = my memory is terrible).

And yeah, I am on cable... I want that T2 or whatever it's called:P

Now, I may have missed this from your first post, but you have ICS enabled right?
  • edited June 2006
Yeah, I do have ICS enabled on both computers.

ICS should only be enabled on the computer that's directly connected to the internet.

I see.... I'll just go change it then. Knowing my luck, it'll still remain completely f**ked up, but hey, atleast I'm trying!

Okay. Good luck. There may be a little more to it, but that could be the main cause.

Red the first post again, bucko. He's using a network crossover cable.

    (Don't feel bad - I've done it, too... :p )

Oh noes! I have apparently recently had a sex change!

    HE = SHE!!!!

ANYWAY, I borrowed a router for a while (...yes, someone whom I know just had a router lying around spare...), but it made no difference. ICS is on this computer only. I've now changed to automatic ip - still not working. And it's showing 'limited or no connectivity'. I've looked around elsewhere and quite a few of them said to just get rid of that notification, but that way doesn't work either.

    Is me doomed? :(

While still using the router, plug each machine into it independently of each other. Turn off ICS and re-run the Internet Connection Wizard, this time picking the option that goes something like "This computer connects directly to the Internet". Stay away from that "Connects through a home Network or residential gateway" business. You'll have to reboot (or do the IP Release/Renew thingamajig) to get the computer to acquire a new IP Addres directly from the router.

Speaking of which, what brand and model# is the router? Knowing that will make it easier to help you configure any little things which need to be tweaked.

Dumb question (maybe), but have you tried a different network cable?

Oh, and sorry about the sex change business. :hiding::p

I'm new here but I'm having a similar problem and would love some help. I have a 2nd PC wirelessly connected through a belkin router and a linksys usb network adapter. The wireless strength is excellent and is says I'm connected but I'm receiving nothing and can't access the internet. I've done a variety of things including manually resetting the IP addresses, sub-masks, etc. using a variety of numbers and finally exactly duplicating the ones that are on the main computer that is directly hooked up with the modem to the cable. Any thoughts? Windows discussed renaming a winsock.dll file - but I'm not sure that is what can help. If you can help - please speak in layman's terms, I'm a novice. thx
