ok, i got a virus that did not let me open explorer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wininet.dll is infected with W32:/Alemod.f.dll and cannot be cleaned. it seemed like a few others have been having the same problem as myself.

So, i went about "fixing" it. I did a hijackthis log and posted it on dell's forums, but did want to wait for a reply. (in safemode) I followed some directions to cut and paste wininet.dll to a different folder, download a clean copy of wininet, extrat it to the correct folder, and restart. Somthing went wrong in the process and now when I start up my computer I get a svchost.exe application error message. also, i cannot start in safemode anymore. (safemode will start icons/taskbar appear, then it will restart safemode before it finishes loading)


he is a copy of hijackthis BEFORE i cut and pasted the existing file and downloaded a new one.

I am sorry I do not have any ideas, but looking at your log, you seem to have similiar info that I do. May I ask what kind of computer you have and OS? I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 XP Home SP2. I have so many problems I don't know where to start, but at this point I am interested in just in brand and Os you are using.
I would appreciate if you maybe, could take the time to answer.

His OS is WinXP SP2, as you can perhaps see if you look at his HijackThis log closely. The brand you can settle with random123 via pm. If you have any problems that you need help with fixing, you can post it in the forums.

We will try fixing the svchost.exe application error message and your problem in accessing safe mode.
Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow

This command will immediately start the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Does this solve the immediate problems at hand? We will deal with the malware once the error message and the safe mode problem is solved.
