another topsecuritysite.net victim - please help

I believe I have the same symptoms that everybody else with this infection has: homepage is always topsecuritysite.net (shows up as "about: blank" in internet options), random pop-ups every once in awhile, tray icon showing "infected download this....", other pop-up windows saying i'm infected and must download xxx software, etc... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance.

Here's are my logs:

After doing some research on this site on others with this infection, I ran ewido in safe mode. It seems to have gotten rid of the topsecuritysite.net homepage problem. I'm able to set my homepage to my usual. Everything seems to be working normally so far. Haven't gotten any pop-ups or slowdowns yet. I'm not sure if everything has been removed yet (seemed to be too easy), so please review these logs files and let me know if there is anything left I need to remove. Thanks!

    Hi birdie800

    Follow these instructions
    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39544

    After that:

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

    Fix with HjT:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = prosearching.com

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com

UPDATE: I downloaded and ran Killbox (instructions found in another thread) to get rid of the "gdnUS2338.exe". I also deleted the "__delete_on_reboot__winzoa32.dll" and the "4c116e3.exe". Is the "yvvdj.dll" file a problem? I couldn't find the file and killbox didn't find the file either in the "...System32" folder. Please review these latest logs. I'm hoping this is the end of this mess. Thanks for the help!

    Looking quite good :)

That .dll doesn't exist but registry must be cleaned.

    Still something to do:

We'll need to backup registry first:

Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and select Save

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad and to Desktop (save it as "All files" (*.*))

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]
    "{a2cd90b5-e5a2-4aac-a504-c964a6d499df}"=-

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{a2cd90b5-e5a2-4aac-a504-c964a6d499df}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{a2cd90b5-e5a2-4aac-a504-c964a6d499df}]

Doubleclick it, press Yes and ok. Reboot

Send a fresh smitfraudfix report with option #1. Still problems?

Thanks so much for the reply. Everything seems to be okay for the time being. I haven't had any pop-ups and I was actually able to play CS for a couple of hours yesterday without any interruptions (well, except for the gf). It seems like I may be all fixed up! Here's the latest rapport:

EDIT: Oops, I may have spoke too soon about everything being completely okay. Just a minute ago, I got one of those windows error messages about explorer and out of memory warning messages, then everything disappeared except for my wallpaper, and came back again. Now there are a couple of missing items in my tray (from the usual icons anyways). Things only disappeared for a couple of seconds and then came right back. Not sure if this is just coincidence or if it has something to do with some remaining bad stuff on my pc. Thanks.

Log looks good. Still same problems?
  • edited June 2006
I haven't really had a chance to use my computer long enough to see if anything else happens with that explorer error. I'll try to run a few things tonight and open up lots of explorer windows to see if anything happens. Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you posted.
  • edited June 2006
Okay, I'm still having that weird explorer.exe error where the window pops up and says it can't read the memory at xxxxxx address, click ok to terminate problem. It happened several times last night in one session. It seemed like it only happened when I opened folders on my desktop (actual folder with files and not just shortcuts). I haven't used it long enough to confirm that it only happens with desktop folders, but that is what I noticed last night. I'm not sure if something got damaged during all the spyware/malware fiasco I went thru, but it's pretty apparent that something is still wrong. It may be a random coincidence that my hardware is showing some instability cuz the only other times that I've seen this error message for explorer.exe is when I'm testing some overclocking settings and my system is not fully stable. But I haven't touched that stuff for several months now and I've been completely stable. Any ideas?

Try repair installation of windows. Before that, backup most important stuff though nothing should be removed.
