Louisiana's governor has signed into law an anti-violent game bill drafted by anti-game attorney Jack Thompson. The ESA, EMA have since confirmed they will fight the law.

The law known as HB 1381, takes effect immediately and prohibits the sale and distribution of games to minors if "The average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the video or computer game, taken as a whole, appeals to the minor's morbid interest in violence."

Members from both the Republican and Democratic party have shown support for the law. The Louisiana Senate passed the bill with a 35-0 vote, and prior to that, the House passed it 102-0.

In Thompson's public reaction to the law, he says: "The other states which have passed these laws were sloppy in not making the legislative record as complete as it could have been with this hard scientific evidence." adding "...This feels a great deal like personal vindication, by the grace of God..."

The ESA has filed suit against Louisiana, with the Entertainment Merchants Association as a co-plaintiff. ESA president Doug Lowenstein said, "This bill is an unnecessary effort."
He added, "HB 1381 also directly undermines efforts legislators started after enactment of tax credit legislation less than a year ago designed to lure video game development and production to Louisiana to generate needed high-paying technology jobs," noted Lowenstein. "Signing this bill into law would no doubt hurt the state's economy, essentially hanging up a 'Stay Out of Louisiana' sign on the state's borders for video game companies."

OK... from what I see they passed a law that I think was already in place? Are you not supposed to sell M Rated games to minors in the first place?

On another note... this whole "GOD" thing is starting to offend me, maybe I should sue them. :P

keep telling yourself that buddy. Last time I checked, the government wasnt established to accomplish your personal agenda. Like I've said before, it is the damn parents responsibilty. No one should tell me what kind of video game that I can and cant buy. Its a video game. If I want to go shoot some cops in a video game for my own entertainment, then is that any different than shooting deer for enjoyment.

Video games are a fictional world, only for entertainment. If people cant seperate themselves from that then they dont need any games period. This is all brought about by people blamming stuff that they have done on video games, which is the american mentality of "pass the buck, its not my fault"

As far as I know the whole age restrictions on games was a self-imposed thing by the video games industry, it was never an actual law before.

This sort of legislation is going to protect the games industry in the long run. It will stop every other nutcase from blaming computer games for their own parenting problems at least.

Not exactly when little Billy can go down the street to his friend Joey's house and play his big brothers GTA.

It's just like cigarettes, all you need is someone older to get it for you. It doesn't absolve any companies from any sort of liability as long as the media is accessable period.

As far as I can tell, it's just a case of the Louisiana Gov. being a jackass.

All it is is a political move on the governors part, she is just trying to look like a good girl and to gain some good press. Anyone who looks at it in depth will realize that the law is a joke, and will probably create more problems than it will fix.

Last I checked, Governor Kathleen Blanco is a woman. I mean, I haven't checked personally, but she is definitely not "trying to look like a good guy" if reports of her female nature are true.

Gender mistake excepted, you are hitting the nail right on the head, This bitch (yeah, you can tell I really support her :D ) is just trying to buy some votes with BS like this and also sending in the National Guard to New Orleans to help her fellow democrat and New Orleans mayor, "Chocolate City" Nagin out with his crime problem that he can't seem to get under control.:shakehead

This female conehead that our state voted into office last time is just trying everything she can think of to maybe deflect attention from all her previous f'ups.

In an era when high speed internet is on the rise. I reall see this as pointless legslation. Espically when most parents buy their children M rated video games anyways because they either do not know or do not care about the rating system. Most parents just want to shut there nagging kid up and $20 for a hack and slash will often do the trick. Even if they refuse most kids can use BT so as i said before pointless.

Hubby is the influence. Problem is he's not around to make the decisions when they need to be made ...so she flounders til something happens on it's own. Can't make a sensible decision to save her life.
