What a new NIC can do to speed:

I went and bought a LinkSys LNE100TX LAN card because I decided that maybe its better to not use the integrated LAN on the KD7-RAID.

Previously, on Bandwidthplace, I was getting a max 1.2Mbps download speed with the integrated one. Here is what the new one gets me:

Hmm, I have the same mobo, so maybe one of my 3C905's would work better... but... why would it make a difference at such a slow speed (compared to the limit)? Weird.

I really don't know why it would make that much of a difference.

Download speed is pretty much the same when I am here, I am in two different channels in Sysreset (mIRC alternative), two bittorrent clients downloading, KaZaA Lite K++ and eMule running.

    Hardware listed in my sig.

I also recently got this from Adelphia (Cable modem service provider):
    Dear Adelphia Power Link Customer,

We value your business and understand that many of you have an increasing appetite for online content, email and all the benefits of our high-speed internet service. We were pleased to announce last week that we will be increasing the speeds available to our Power Link high-speed internet customers to up to 3 megabytes-per-second downloads and up to 256 kilobytes-per-second uploads. Your Power Link pricing will not change as a result of this service enhancement!

    Maybe it'll get even better.

Just like to point out that this thread shouldn't turn into a "Look how fast my internet speed is" discussion as we already have one and it serves no actual use. Lets just stick to the actual topic.

BDR: That really shouldn't happen as the NIC should be capable of transfering over 10MBp/s and that connection is only 1.8Mb (which in comparison is tiny).

Something must have been screwed up in the first place to make such a huge difference.

Try benchmarking both cards to another machine using something like SiSoft Sandra.

I'd also like to point out that the adelphia letter says kilobytes instead of kilobits. Thats pretty funny, call and complain you want your 3 megabyte per second(24Mbps) cable downloads.

SiSoft Sandra doesn't give an accurate report of speed on my NIC. Even though I get up to 128KB/s download speed, Sandra will tell me my max is like 32KB/s

    Nightshade:

Understand, though, that the 10/100/1000mbps rating that we are used to are BANDWIDTH measurements, not speed measurements.

I know, and I said, you should be able to get about 10MBps speed (or a bit lower if you are using a hub rather than a switch). I seem to get 9600KBps without a buffered switch, and 10500KBps with.

Dan: I have no idea why I called you BDR. Crossing threads I think.

Getting a new network card rated for 10 MEGABYTES a second should not even begin to change your download speed which is approximately 1/10th of a megabyte per second.

Basically, your card would have to be screwed up so badly so as to be running at 1 megabit, or 100 kilobytes per second. Even if it had somehow default to BASE10, or 1 megabyte per second, you should've been able to download properly.

Judging by your speeds, you're using DSL. It looks like your ISP kicked from you a 1200 to a 1500 account.

You are talking to me right? I have cable modem service, and they only offer 128Kbps and 1Mbps service, which I have the 1Mbps service. DSLReports still says I am around 800Kbps-975Kbps.

The biggest problem I have now with this new NIC is that my computer restarts for no reason every 3 hours. ZoneAlarm Pro in the event viewer says the TrueVector service file was corrupted.

Usually when this occurs, the best thing to do is reinstall windows.

I know, NS. Just backing you up, mate.

    Danball:

Realize that on a cable modem service, the speed they say your line is the RATED speed. You can get much MUCH slower because you share bandwidth with everyone on your local node, or you could get much much faster if no one is online. You have a 1mbps connection, but you were getting 20 kb/s OVER that. Now you got 80 kb/s over that on a new test. That's typical for cable.

I have a 3mbps cable line, and I average in excess of 430kb/s. Sometimes as low as 225 on a bad night.

Tis the way the cookie crumbles. New network card probably didn't do anything.

here's my KD7 onboard with cable further south of you danball1976. I think it's just ISP related but maybe I'll get around to seeing what a pci NIC will get me.

I went there again today, and relized that I did the test for the dailup users. Thats why I got that 1.8Mbps speed. I did the correct test and still get the 1.2Mbps like I did before.

Whats even wierder is that I had to reinstall Windows because of this new NIC. Windows kept restarting every 2 hours for no reason. They way it was, I was doing something, all of the sudden was a restart. The NIC was in PCI slot 3, before reinstalling windows, I moved it to PCI slot 2. Also, it gave me problems with installing the drivers when I first put it in saying something to the effect "Problem installing drivers due to name is already used by a device or service". Also trying to uninstall the NIC (both the integrated and PCI NIC) gave me the notice "Cannot uninstall as device may be required to boot the computer"

When I reinstalled windows I had no problem updating the drivers, and windows doesn't restart.

did you disable the onboard nic in bios since you were going to install pci nic - that might have made it easier.

I did disable the onboard NIC in the BIOS.

I installed it, turned the computer on, went into the BIOS and disabled the onboard NIC, then restarted into windows.
