Valve Software has published some interesting stats collected via Steam for Half-Life 2: Episode One. These include number of sessions played, average session times, completion times and percentage of games completed.
Valve said that Steam has allowed it to quantify players' gaming habits to greater extents.
- Half-Life 2: Episode One has logged over 750,000 player sessions since June 10 (a session is from launch to quit), with the average session time being 37 minutes.
- Players on average, have played the game for a total of 2 hours and 48 minutes. The average completion time is almost five hours. A figure very close to Valve's target time.
- Steam recorded only 23 percent of gamers finished Half-Life 2: Episode One since June 10.
Valve believes gamers may be quitting before the credits roll, or a bug in its data collection process could be causing an inaccurate read.
As with any industry, data collection is crucial to understanding consumers. Valve's use of Steam in this instance shows the potential role that online connectivity can play in gauging player habits.
More data can be found at Valve's website.

I'm sure that if you read the EULA for Steam that there's something in there about anonymous user stats.
All I know is that I have serious issues with Steam, and while the collection of usage statistics isn't really a big deal, it's not going to convince me to drink the Kool-Aid, either.
When you first launch it it will prompt you. (There Statistical survey's)
