BBC reports that a Spanish telecom is selling wireless routers for cheap in order to encourage people to cover the country with wireless hotspots.
A Spanish firm is to sell subsidised routers as part of a plan to turn domestic wi-fi networks into public hotspots.

Fon will sell wi-fi routers, which allow people to surf the net wirelessly, for $5 (£2.75).

The company is hoping to create a "social movement" as well as a business.

...

In exchange for receiving a router, users must agree to share their wireless connections with other Fon users for 12 months, the company said.

Maybe we should try that in the us, oh, no wait, scatch that; our national debt is already too large to extend the national budget any further.

It's a company that's doing it in Spain. There are companies trying to do some similar things here, but it's not gaining much traction.

What an interesting idea! I wonder what the result will be? Coincidentally, there's also a story on Slashdot about Colorado sheriffs wardriving to find and warn owners of unsecured routers.

ahh, the police are gonna mess up the free internet for everyone. Really, if we could just start getting a bunch of people that have high speed internet wireless ap's, then we could get a good portion of the us 'hot'.
