A friend of mine seems to be having some pop-up ad issues, ran AdAware, SpyBot and AntiVIR... couldn't really find the source as it still occurs. Heres a hijack this

Any help would be appreciated... I'm stumped, I hope I don't have to do a format just to fix pop-ups.

    Hi r3cca, welcome to Short-Media! :)

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar to: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Choose close to terminate the application..
"...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Thanks for the reply and welcome, I did as you told me too and I keep getting this error even when I tried fixing it.

    C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
C:\Program Files\Symnatec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device failed DLL initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the program.

I get a prompt of close or Ignore if Ignore it gives me this log:

    L2MFIX find log 051206

I'm not sure if thats accurate enough I'm not sure how to fix the other error with L2mfix

Edit: I tried to find the file that was specified in the error, and was unable to locate it.

Hmm...never come across an error like that before.

Try option #5 and then follow the instructions from there. Let me know how it goes.
  • edited July 2006
Hmm yea I tried Option #5 and it didn't really seem to help... :S

Any other way to get rid of L2M SpyWare? Cause I just realized that that's the issue after reading through the Sticky Threads

    Lets try the fix!

Close any browsers and programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

    Can you try this:

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.

    - Print out these instructions and close ALL windows before continuing.
    - Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
    - Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
    - You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
    - When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
    - Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
    - You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
    - When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown
    your computer
    , click OK.
    - Your computer will then shutdown.
    - Turn your computer back on.
    - Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download
MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

Restoring SeDebugPrivilege for Administrators - Succeeded

Based on the HiJack this I think it's gone? I will be confirming to make sure if any popups show up and thanks a lot for the help.

Yep, the bad entry is gone. Last thing to do:

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    Click Fix Checked

I don't see any indication of a Firewall in your log. If you do not have a Firewall, please download one of the following - They are Free!

Zone Alarm << I recommend this
    Sunbelt Kerio PF

Reboot and post a new HJT log. Make sure WordWrap is turned off under Format in Notepad. :)

About the firewall, I believe her router has a firewall set up already so I'll double check with that, if she doesn't I'll set up one for her. As for the word wrap sorry she's e-mailing me the logs and im on a UNIX system using "Text Editor" theres no such thing as word wrap :o

Seems to be fine now thanks again for the help.

    OK cool!

The log is clean now. Let me know if I can help with anything else, or if we can mark this resolved?
