Wireless router configuration

I have a friend who owns a duplex. She has a new renter upstairs who wants to share her internet but my landlord friend is worried that whatever's on her tenant's computer might jump into hers. Is there any way to configure a wireless router (her Dlink just died on her so she is getting a new something er other) that will separate her upstairs tenant from her part of the network?

Things don't just "jump" onto computers. If they are paranoid then turn off filesharing on the machines.

I wonder if the wireless router is capable of doing VLAN configurations so that each computer that connects is on their own virtual lan and unable to see anyone else on the network.

That's the kind of thought I was going for. Does anyone make a residential type wireless router that can do that? She has to buy a new one any way.

Thats not entirely true there are many virus's that use exploites in windows and can transfer over the network. (Blaster was a good example).

However all you need is the latest windows updates and/or a firewall (Theres a decent one built into xp) to block them.

My linksys does it, but I have he HyperWRT firmware running on it. I don't remember if it had it before or not, I almost wanna say it did.

At least I thought my Linksys had it, I can't find it now, hrm.

If your intrested in running DD-WRT then you will need a Linksys WRT54GL or an older revision of the WRT54G (Version 4 or older).

Thanks but she's a nervous type. Not sure I want to introduce a third party firmware. Besides, this has to work. If there's any dinking around with it, it's going to me running over there doing the dinking....

EDIT: Just got done looking at all the routers on the Linksys sight. The you have to go up to the wmv200 to get multiple SSID's and VLAN. It's only about $70 on Pricegrabber.com. But there is one review there and that guy says the damn thing reboots every time you turn around. He's spent hours on the phone with Linksys, upgraded firmware, took it back and exchanged it and the second one's doing the same thing.

If she keeps her machine patched and up to date it should be fine.

You're not going to find any peice of hardware out there without someone complaining about it.
