What firewall to use?

I use WinXP Pro and do a fair amount of online gaming as well as plenty of other Internet activities. I've been using ZoneAlarm for a while, but wanted to ask the experts here what's the best firewall to use? I'm looking for something that has good security without being a nuiscance and hopefully doesn't take up half my system resources, as well. Does anybody have suggestions?

try look 'n' stop. its a very light rules-based firewall. it wont slow down ur computer or connection.

this page has rules for a few games, if not u can always visit the forums for more help.

I use a hardware firewall built into my Linksys Router. Does me just fine.

If you're behind a router you don't need one, if you aren't then I'd just use Windows own Firewall.

Except windows' own firewall is absolutely terrible. If you're behind a router, you don't need one, if you're not, I recommend Sygate personal firewall.

I'm not behind a router and I agree with Thrax that Windows' firewall is horrible. I'm looking for a good software firewall.

I used to use Tiny then later on Kerio.

Both turned to **** as they got updated and I'm not sure if either are developed in the same way now.

In all truth a NAT firewall (type in routers) won't protect you from everything and a software firewall won't either! Truth, Windows firewall totally sucks! If you really want security then a hardware firewall and a good software firewall will compliment each other and keep you as safe as possible. These days most hackers don't care much about individual users and concentrate on big companies and sites as the gain, or potential loss to the victim is greater. I personally like to be secure and have been using the combination of hardware and software for some time now. I am finally using all free AV and firewall protection with AVG for my AV and the nVidia software firewall that came with my MB. You can also do a lot by simply manually configuring your ports and manually configuring your internet security settings in Windows. This is often a pain for most and requires constant scrutiny on your part.

I've generally relied solely on the firewall in my router, but what Mt_Goat says is true. Should you get a worm or trojan on your computer it might be able to open the machine up to the DMZ in your router settings, meaning that you essentially have no firewall at all.
