SM25's new home

Finally found time to make this thread. Been so busy with my new business and other things.

Okay PARTS!

Came with an ECS motherboard, 1900+, 4GB hard drive, 256MB SDRAM, 3DLabs video card, and uh...that's all the important stuff.

Firstly...I replaced the hard drive (I don't trust those slow old 4GB drives) with a nice new 120GB WD IDE drive.

The CDROM drive that came with her quit reading my Windows installation CDs MID install, so I replaced that with a black LG CDRW (matches case better anyways :))

And finally, so I could have a DVI connection to run to my LCD I threw in a Geforce 3 TI-500.

The case arrived at my house bent on both sides in the back on the corners, I'm not sure if it left Prof's like that?

I have her setup to do batch work as I don't yet have a DSL connection in my new room. I have her in my room however, so I can keep a close eye on how she is working.

I already had a scare with the PSU. It seems one of the little copper coils inside it moved somehow, and it blocked the fan from spinning. Luckily this happened when I was working on it, so I noticed fairly quickly and saved it from overheating.

Bent case (hard to see):

I'll take good care of her!

... why does an SM unit need a 5.1 speaker system?
  • FoldingAddictFoldingAddict Montgomery, AL
    edited July 2006
Those speakers aren't hooked up to SM25, they are hooked up to the RCA out of my LCD (which is in fact an LCD TV.) I don't use that LCD for computing (native res of only 1280x768.) It's for consoles and DVDs. BUT it does have a DVI connection so I can quickly check on SM25 when I'm gettting up or going to bed. It's just a matter of convenience as well as helping me stay on top of things.

    Looks good!

I guess the P.O. gave it a little workout, as I don't recall any bent corners when I shipped it. At least they're on the back.

We're looking forward to seeing SM25 rocking & rolling again. :D

Well she's locking up every 50 frames or so. Not sure why, it's not due to CPU heat I know that. She's got no overclock. Hmmm...looking into it.

have you tried removing the -forceasm? some of my nodes did that on some work units.

Since it's a slower Athlon, I don't have it setup for any advanced units. It's just doing timeless tinkers, so nothing TOO demanding for it.

    Driver conflict, perhaps?

Try what GHoos said about a driver conflict. :)

I've also seen FAH have trouble with some Geforce cards of that era when a 3-D screensaver was enabled, should that apply to your situation.

Yeah I'm looking into a driver issue. I don't have a screen saver set, but if I can't pin point anything, I'll put that cruddy 3DLabs card back in her and see what happens. ;)

It ran through ten passes right before I shipped it out. Never hurts to re-check, though. :)

You could also try deleting the core. FAH should download a new one and pick up the WU right where it left off. :fold:

Well hmmm. I'm thinking it was the RAM. I swapped out every part, finally ending with the RAM. I swapped the 2 128MB sticks of PC133 for a single 512MB stick of PC3200 Crucial DDR and she hasn't locked up since.

COOL.... Glad it was somewhat easy to resolve. Let us know if you need replacement parts.

Yeah...been folding for AWHILE. She's on unit 06 (unit 7) of a batch of tinkers. Should be 2400 points posted when she finishes the batch.

    Update:

SM25 just turned in a batch of tinkers worth 2,241 points. She's now working on a regular Gromacs unit. :(
