Geforce 7600GS unlockable pipelines?

edited October 2006 in Hardware
Ive just been reading through your forums and found it very interesting that a standard geforce 6200 (which was originally shipped with reject 6600 cores) could have extra pixel pipelines unlocked through software means (rivatuner) and thus perform similar to the 6600 core of which it is based on. Through extra research ive also learned some ATI radeon models (inc the X1600) can also gain from this free performance boost using rivatuner.

Recently i purchased a new computer, and had it fitted with a Leadtek Geforce 7600GS PCI-E graphics card. intrigued by the free performance boost some GPU's can recieve, im wondering if my 7600gs can too, have additional pixel pipleines unlocked via software... after all, if i remember right it is a downgraded 7600GT, and built on the same architecture as the 7800 etc.

I do have rivatuner installed and could try it out myself, but before I do i would also like to know if there is any risk of ruining my video card IF i were able to unlock some extra pixel pipelines...

    Hi eddie06,

    Welcome to Short-Media.

Unfortunately, I have not come across any pipeline mods for the 7600GS. There is apparently a lot of performance potential with additional voltage and core overclocking. I saw someone on vrzone hit 700MHz on the core (up from 400MHz default). This would probably be your best bet to get a boost. Have you tried upping the core frequency yet?

I've been thinking of getting the GS, a couple of them maybe, but the GT and GS both have 12 pipes, so I doubt either has any pipes available to open. I'd imagine they overclock well though, make sure to stay away from any Turbo Cache.

im a little bit reluctant to try overclocking since ive never actually attempted it before.... ima check out the article though, if it can be overclocked on a stock passive H/S then i might give it a go :)

thx for the info, shame i cant unlock any extra pipelines, but a 700MHz boost would be good enough :))

Here's a review of a 7600GS with some overclocking results that don't require a voltage mod:

That's the exact card I bought for my wife's PC upgrade, and I'm looking forward to seeing a $110 card outperform the 9800 Pro that I originally purchased for $277. ;)

Since my 6800GT kicked the bucket for good, I plan to hold myself over with a heavily overclocked 7600GS for a few months before I turn it back in to EVGA for credit on a new DX10 card (after the dust settles on the G80 and DX10 performance is optomized).

Should be a fun project, and a smart upgrade path.
