Just run TightVNC (google it) instead. It installs itself and then starts automatically as a service.
I have had that for a while, and it works on my network great, and I had it dynamically-dns'd for a while, but I want to set up a ssh tunnel, beause school is still sniffing at the packets and at the very end they were causing me a lot of lag, ssh should fix that.
Although, I am a bit foggy on setting up and running a ssh connection. the way I am thinking is:
VNC server on my computer > SSH Server? > Internet > Dynamic DNS Service > Internet.
Then at school I can open an SSH Conection then log on to the VNC?
I need some help setting this up if anyone want to help/ guide me through it, I have never done it before.
SSH tunnels are crazy, and fun once you get the hang of them. But you need an SSH server first? Well... I'd do cygwin (www.cygwin.com) myself unless there's a good free server I haven't heard of--becaues cygwin's not the easiest program to set up.
alright, Im gonna give it a try. Im still having trouble connecting to the vnc even on my network. I have the ports forwarded (5800 & 5900), and my ip is dns'd. But when I open the viewer, it asks me to put the address and port in, so I do, but it says it cant find the server.
Okay so when I start a server, the first pic is what shows up. Someone guide me to what the settings should be. The second pic is what pops up when I open the viewer. Also, do we need a repeater in this case for multiple viewing?
The second pic is the client, what you would put on your flash drive to open the remote connection.
I left all of the settings the same except changed it to ues ports 5800&5900, and when last client logs off, lock workstation.
I am just trying to figure out how to connect to it, I have it mapped through no-ip.com, and it is portforwarded, so it should work, although it is not. I think that no-ip.com may only work for port 80, so I may try forwarding port 80 on the outside to 5900, although, I thought it was for any port, I guess not.

Ok so how exactly does the server start. Is it started if we have the tray icon, or is there more configuration required? And what does the viewer have to do to access it.

Af can u go on AIM?
Enverex helped me set everything up so... Thanks guys.
Ah crap, I replied to the wrong thread anyway. I already have UltraVNC setup as a service. I'm trying to get a SSH tunnel setup. Sorry for the confusion.
Well, I have it setup, running as a service, and I know it is working, becuase I can run the viewer on the machine it is running one, and I get an infinite window type thing (think pointing two mirrors at each other), so it is working, but I can not get it to find the vnc server anywhere else.
no-ip (or whichever service) DNS lookup shouldn't know or care what port you're going to use, airborn. Do you get your router's WAN IP address if you "nslookup youraddress.no-ip.com" (whatever your address is) from the command prompt?
yeh, when I do 'nslookup airbornflght.zapto.org', I get my wan address. Do you think cox could have those ports closed? I dont know why they would, although, it is a common vnc port number, so I will change them and see if it works. Cox doesnt like you running servers without paying some $200 a month for a static ip.
edit: Ok, I just changed the ports, so I will give it a try later, going to bed for now.
Okay now my friends can all logon to my server, but I can't log on to any of theirs. I have the ports forwarded, but they aren't techminded enough to do that. I tried to guide them through it, but.... Anyways, does anyone know any ports that are usually open by default? I know 27015 is usually open but I'm not sure that will work as a port. Another thing, does anyone have RCA routers? I've never personally seen one and my friend says that's what he's behind, and I just can't find the login info. I checked their site and half the time I get Error 404 and other times I can't find anything for wireless or router or anything.
RCA made routers, are we talking about the RCA that makes tv's? If so, I would ditch it and buy a $40 linksys that will be 100 times better.
Scar, you are further than me. hell. I have the ports forwarded, but it aint working. What ports are you using?
I'm using 5800 and 5900 display 0. Let me get you a screenie of my router settings...
EDIT: Here we go:
EDIT 2: Forgot to reply to the router thing. It's my friend's router not mine, and I don't think he'll switch. Also, the router itself works fine, it's just we have no support for login and settings abd stuff from the rca website.

If they don't forward the port or put themselves in their router's DMZ, you can't reach them...
I believe most ports are open with some ISPs and all are open with the rest, but the router doesn't know which host behind it on NAT is the one that the outside connection is attempting to reach.

I have no ip setup, and I have TightVNC running. is there anything else I need to do? I got that far, now I am at a loss.
no-ip is mapping to airbornflght.zapto.org; connect to the vnc now? isnt it just:
airbornflght.zapto.org:5900?
But that will not be an encrypted stream, no I want to get it tuneled through ssh. I know that I need to get a SSH server, but after that I am lost.

ports 5800 and 5900 forwarded to 192.168.1.2, which is the ip address that I have assigned the computer running the server.
Who were you insulting? Don't mean to be rude, just want to make sure it wasn't me, and if it was, why.
