Locked AP's?

Just curious, I had a guest using a Linksys card saying he could see our AP but it was showing a lock on it and would ask for a key, but of course our AP is not locked, naturally his friends could connect just fine.
Why would an open AP be showing up as locked, my guess is that a setting in his wireless may be the culprit, but I am unsure. Normally I wouldn't ask, but this guy seemed to just be bull****ting me for free wired access. Or one of our guys blew him off becuase he said our guy knew of this issue at that site and would look into it. I found no tickets on it, and no one knows about it.
So any ideas? If this guy calls back I can have more info available to fix his card or tell him he ain't mooching off us anymore even though it's not us who charges :P
