at the moment, when i ctrl-alt-del, and go to the processes tab, it shows 43 individual processes. is this far too many? i hardly recognize any of the processes, and it seems like my system isn't running nearly as well as it should. what should i do?

    I've got 46. It's not unusual to have that many.

    What OS.. ?? and what do you have running in the system tray? :)

    My extra processes are AVG, F@H (which adds two processes), SMTP server (my ISP SMTP is always down), Apache, MySQL and firewall :)

    I think you are worrying a little too much. However...

    Three tips for you...

    1) Start menu---> run---> msconfig

    Take a peek at what you have starting up ;)

    2) Start menu ---> programs ---> startup

    Take a peek there as well for any shortcuts

    3) BlackVipers Windows XP service guide .. take a good long read (be careful to understand what you are disabling!.. Im not taking the blame if you disable your login screen ;D) and disable a few un-used or irrelevant services :)

    thanks bro. i've read the service giude before and gone through and applied it to my computer, but i'll try all of that again.

    when you say "Take a peek there as well for any shortcuts" do you mean i should remove them, or i should see if i simply recognize them to justify their presence in my processes list?

    here is a link to a great website ive found (tweak3d.net)that has helped me out a lot and taught me some new things about my computer, this link (if i do it right!) is a post that deals with the same issue that you are having and shows you how to keep startup programs to a minimum hence keeping the processes down

    You can work out what all of the services are by reading them yourself in the services list and deciding wether you need them or not.

    Only 16 processes on my XP Pro laptop and only 26 on my Desktop (with virus-checker and other things running).
