at the moment, when i ctrl-alt-del, and go to the processes tab, it shows 43 individual processes. is this far too many? i hardly recognize any of the processes, and it seems like my system isn't running nearly as well as it should. what should i do?

What OS.. ?? and what do you have running in the system tray?
MM runs a lean mean machine.
I think you are worrying a little too much. However...
Three tips for you...
1) Start menu---> run---> msconfig
Take a peek at what you have starting up
2) Start menu ---> programs ---> startup
Take a peek there as well for any shortcuts
3) BlackVipers Windows XP service guide .. take a good long read (be careful to understand what you are disabling!.. Im not taking the blame if you disable your login screen ) and disable a few un-used or irrelevant services
when you say "Take a peek there as well for any shortcuts" do you mean i should remove them, or i should see if i simply recognize them to justify their presence in my processes list?

Only 16 processes on my XP Pro laptop and only 26 on my Desktop (with virus-checker and other things running).
