Both CD & DVD Drivers are out! Code 39

edited July 2006 in Science & Tech
My computer got absolutely hammered by a virus I had to reinstall Windows XP to get it back on line. Perfect! Except now the drivers for my Plexwriter 402040A CDWR Drive and my Plextor PX-708A DVD Writer don't work.

Windows had trouble installing the drivers and so I cannot use them. Bizarre, considering the OS had to use them to load itself. I tried going on the Plextor site and getting the drivers but there's just something called Firmware which I tried to install but I can't.! Why? It doesn't recognise the drives because the drivers are faulty!! Arrrrgh!!! :banghead:

Plus my PC is still I bit twitchy from the virus... please help. It's been months!

Try uninstalling the drives in device manager. Uninstall the IDE Controller to which they are attached as well. Make sure you click on View>>Show Hidden Devices so you get them all.

If it doesn't clear up after that, head over to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum and post a HijackThis log in a new thread there.

Thanks! I was just going to try that but now I can't even see anything during the BOOT. My monitor remains blank during the BOOT as if it is not connected. This is really weird because I would have though that that was a hardware problem (nothing a virus could effect).

When you say that your "monitor remains blank during the BOOT", can I assume that you eventually get a display once Windows is fully loaded? I had that happen to me for a brief time a while back. I never figured out what caused it and never figured out what made it go away.

Try tapping the F8 key before Windows starts to load and see if you can get into Safe Mode.

If/when you get windows fixed, try method 1 from this MSKB article.

When you say that, the only IDE drivers I can see are the:

Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller
    Primary IDE Channel
    Secondary IDE Channel

    Should I delete these?

Thanks Thrax. That was an excellent link. Unfortunately, I cannot use the registry method because I don't have the registry key UpperFilters it talks about...

Delete either the Primary or the Secondary one, depending on where the drives are attached; do both if the optical drives are on different channels.

I did that. When I rebooted it detected and loaded the same faulty drivers. I can't even reload them from windows because obviously it's a CD. Maybe I'll do what you said and head over to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum.

When you do, post a notice here and I'm sure that someone will have a quick look at your HijackThis log to see if that tactic looks promising.

Just to double-check, can you still boot from your WinXP CD? That would eliminate any physical problems with the drives, MB, cables, etc.
