Which one,
  • 3800
  • 4200
  • 4400
  • 4600

I am leaning towards the 4400, because I should still be able to hit 2.6 easy, as well as have a 1mb cache. or will the 4600 serve me better with an extra 200mhz stock? I cant afford the 4800.

4400 :) is the best bang for the buck if it has 1MB cache per core :) the others all have 512KB

Yeah since they lowered the prices that 4400 with 1MB cache per core looks very tempting even though my 3800+ with 512KB per core runs so nicely.

yeh, thats what I was thinking, and i should be able to hit 2.6 easily, if not 2.7.

Then I am also getting my brother a 4000+ since it is only $129, which is just awesome.

Airborn, you might also consider the X2-3800 for your brother too, since it's only $166. That's if his board is socket 939 and not socket 754 of course. :)

Last weeks prices, or next weeks??

I wouldn't buy anything until the dust settles and Core2 is actually shipping.

A few months back I went with the 3800. It is running 2.35 with 2GB of ram. I would like to put a little single 512 in and see how high the CPU will go.
Today I would also go with the 4400. Get your brother the 3800 and save a couple of bucks.

    Serve you better at what?

Chances are you'll get a better overclock with the 3800 ...IMO.

Well, I think that I want to get the 4400, as it has the nice cache. Then for my little bro, I was thinking of getting him the 4000+ and oc'ing it, because I heard that it would out perform the 3800X2, is that so?

also, for his rig, I need a good stable 939 board with AGP on it, because rather than buy a new video card for it, I want to give him my 6800GT, as he would put it to good use. This board also needs to be decent at OC'ing, but I am starting to fear that I may not find on, the 4000 has a 12x multi doesnt it, so if I could even just get a small bump to 220, then that would land me at 2.6Ghz.

Prices are coming down again, hot dog!

I probably wont be getting these rigs immediately, I am still working stuff out, and just seing what will work, you dont think that these processors are going to go back up/disapear do you?

Well, that is a tough call. 939 is going away, so I wouldn't wait too long.

Ed's rule of buying electronics at a good price: If you need a part now, and you find it at a price you are willing to pay, then buy it and use it now.

If you want to try to time the market just go buy lottery tickets.

yeh, but timing this has a lot better odds than the oklahoma lottery, which I figured out to be roughly one in 5 million, picture a big tube wil 4,999,999 yellow bb's, and one red one, reach in and grab a bb, chances are, you didnt get the red one.

This one, I will wait and see if they get better in a week or two, I have a good chance of timing this right I believe.

    The 4400 I tried wouldn't do past 2.52.
It all depends on the steppings I suppose. I looked at xtremesystems but I couldn't find the stepping chart. I'll look again.

I suppose it would, I thought I have read some things on it, I know the 4000 will do 2.6 easily.

    X2 3800+ $169
    X2 4200+ $219
    X2 4400+ $455
    X2 4600+ $269
    X2 4800+ $499

Considering current prices and future system changes I would grab a X2 3800+, OC it to 2.5ghz+ and call it a day.

I would also go with a NF4 PCIe mobo. Grab a PCIe 6600GT or 7600GT, and sell the 6800GT while it still has good value.

    except that I can get a 4400 for $255.

and maybe you didnt see that I am building two new computers, and putting different parts in another, as I am moving the 6800GT, and memory and other stuff from my current pc to the 4000 that I am going to build

It might ...depends on what stepping is shipping and what it will do. You can special order a select stepping but it will cost a bit extra.

The ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 supports both AGP, PCI-Express, socket 939 AND (with a $30 add-in card) Socket AM2, and the board itself is only ~$65.

It's also a really nice overclocker - just look at my sig.
