Getting wireless internet to my desktop from my laptop!

Okay, I don't have an extra wireless adapter for my desktop.........

So I thought I could use my laptop and bridge the internet to my desktop.

So I connected a normal CAT cable between the two. I get the red "X" saying it can't connect, go ahead and try to bridge....doesn't work!

So I connected a "crosstalk" CAT cable between teh two. I get limited or no connectivity. I go ahead and try to bridge......doesn't work!

Infact my internet on my laptop doesn't work until I delete (not just disable) the MAC bridge.

Am I doing this right? Is there another way for my desktop to get the internet from my laptop? :honoes:

If you are connecting a network card to another network card directly you need to use a crossover cable.

That limited or no connectivity is probably down to incorrect tcp/ip settings. Make sure you have proper IP/subnet/gateway settings.

Instead of screwing around with a bridge (cant even tell you what that is for) use ICS instead.

    Whats ICS?

What do I need to setup the IP/sbunet/gateway to?

Will the windows setup a new connection wizard do all this for me?

ICS will take care of all that for ya, it will bring up a dhcp server for ya and take care of the NAT.

    here ya go, http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

Depending on how paranoid you are DHCP might not be the best way to go about things as you are also using wireless.

The IP and subnet are up to you. All you have to do is make sure the subnet is the same on all of your devices, typically you would use 192.168.x.x for your average home network but thats your call.

    Ignore the network setup feature.

If you need help setting all of this up then the following will be useful:-

list of all networking devices you have or plan to use
number of machines to be networked
how you plan on connecting everything
    internet connection type

Let us know what you have so we can argue about what will work best and we should everything settled and working by next tuesday :)

Well I went to my laptop and did the configure a network wizard, and choose ot share it all.

I think all I really had to do was goto properites -> share -> and click share this internet connection with other computers.

The wizard worked, but forced me to enable the windows firewall (disabled now), but my desktop picked up the network without me doing anything to it.

Oh ya I did use the crosstalk CAT cable, those things are AWESOME!
